I am considering buying either a 458 Spider or perhaps a Speciale. Is there any way a technician can pull the data and see if the car has been tracked? I had a Lotus Elise at one point where they could see it had most likely been on the track, but they also told me they could erase that data.

IIRC, you could pull engine data from the Elise and see how many times it was redlined. Perhaps that's what you are talking about? I don't think 458s store that type of data but could be wrong. 430s definitely don't. In any event, probably the best way to tell if a car has been tracked is to put it on a lift and check for bits of tire compound stuck in hidden areas. Not many 458s ever see a track and I wouldn't worry about it anyway. Modern Ferraris are built to take that type of use.

Why does that matter? I'm a racer at the highest level of amateur racing. The very few owners who take their ferrari on track barely stress the cars beyond freeway speeds on a surface that is much kinder on the cars than unpredictable street surfaces.

IMO it should be a requirement to ownership. :)

Indeed. Track days should be requirements with these cars. ALL of them.

If you don’t ever track your Ferrari, how will you actually know everything’s working properly?

Would this be a deterrent to buying either or just a curiosity?

In most cases a car that has seen track usage is often better maintained than a car that sits in a garage all year.

On top of that, the consumables and fluids are refreshed often.

I might be concerned about track usage if the car was a three pedal or single clutch and clutch wear was an issue but you can get a read out for that. I wouldn't worry about that much with a 458. I may be worried about over revs but I believe the DCT will shift for you and generally not allow this. I've made some shifting mistakes on track but the computers always jump in and save my ass.
