Just curious of everyone's opinion with respect to what you consider to be the "ultimate" vehicles for a collection. Imagine you were building a collection, the showcase would be a slowly ascending staircase with display areas for vehicles. Each vehicle up the staircase would be more rare, special, costly, etc than the one preceding it. You define the criteria.

Here is the question: given vehicles that can actually be purchased, what would you put at the top? In other words, what would you consider to be the ultimate cars, motorcycles, boats, or planes you could procure for the collection? The key point, however, would be that you would actually have to be able to buy one for the collection. Adding the Wright Flyer or Space Shuttle to an aviation collection would certainly be the ultimate, but I doubt they are available at any price.

I am sure many people will mention one-of-a-kinds, I'm going to keep my personal list to cars and bikes which at least a few were made. Feel free to list your choices for my catagories, or make up your own catagory for your favorite.

    The "Ultimate",,,
    Pre-WWII car: Bugatti Royale
    Ferrari: 250GTO
    Porsche: 959
street motorcycle: any T.E. Lawrence Brough Superior (I believe he owned a total of 7)
    racebike: Britten V1000
    racecar: any Senna F1 car
race car w/o any race history: F50GT
    modern supercar: McLaren F1
    Ducati: 1974 750SS
    Corvette: Callaway Sledgehammer

    Look forward to your responses.

    I'll limit it to Ferraris...

    Working Backwards:

Enzo - Latest Supercar; may be removed in 15 years but who's to say how it will age? For now it looks to be an important Ferrari.

F 40 - I think this car was much more "important" than the F 50. The ultimate street track car.

Testarossa - An 80's Icon that screamed "Ferrari" when it came out.

308 - Another Icon, from the 70's into the 80's. Beautiful to look at without being over the top...a real "sports car".

288 GTO - The true Ferrari supercar that has aged as well as any Ferrari ever. Only the F 40 did what the 288 did as well.

Daytona - Last front engine 12 of the old era. I didn't include the 550 although maybe I should have as the 1st front engined 12 of the new era. I'm ignoring the 400i because it's just not that great a car.

246 - First mid engine Ferrari people could actually buy (yes, it's a Dino but shut up)

Before the 246, I'm not well enough versed but I'd say the Lusso should be there as well as a California and a NART....amongst others. Also, some F1 cars and a P3/4 would be there.

I don't really want to categorize my list, they're just the cars I like and respect the most.

Dodge Viper-I'm a huge Viper fan, and I believe the Viper is one of the reasons Chrysler survived the 90s

Ferrari F40-Probably one of the most influential Ferraris made

McLaren F1-Don't think I need to back this up

1967 Shelby GT500-One of the greatest and most desirable muscle cars ever

Original Shelby 427 Cobra-A great racer, and hard to argue to a car that was the fastest accelerating car for about 3 decades

Ferrari 250 GTO-Rarest and most desirable Ferrari. Sets the mark for other collectibles

And my "ultimate car" - 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi, all original-One of the fastest muscle cars built. I could go on and on, but this car just draws me to it. I saw one at a car show last year, fully documented, all original, even had the original sticker. In my opinion, the ultimate car. I've promised myself I will oneday own one; don't care how much it costs or how long it takes to find it.

Forget the ultimate list. Buy what you like and what you can afford. Collecting is and should be a personal thing, not based on what other people think.

THANK YOU, judge4re. Fantasy motorturbation is ridiculous.

My list consists of many cars which may or may not reach 100 mph.

I can't tell you what that list is, or the price will skyrocket.

Well if it doesn't go over 100 MPH, and have at least 12 cylinders, or 8, or 6 or 4, or even 10, it isn't a real sports car is it?

The question is about what WE think are important cars; not a popularity contest. I listed my opinion of significant Ferraris; the question is which cars we think significant and I decided to keep a Ferrari theme. One is free to choose other marques under the parameters of the question. It's fun to see which cars others consider the ultimate in an historical sense; I expect a wide variety. My FAVORITE cars are not the ones I listed; my faves may not be important in automobile evolution.

I have bought what I like and what I can afford, without regard to historical importance....but that wasn't the question. The question addresses which "changed the playing field"....maybe the NSX should be mentioned huh?

I'm still trying to figure out why you'd want to waste the space for a Corvette, a Ducati and a Porsche in there... maybe it's just me.

Yeah..Corvettes are important but no one Vette is significant. A Ducati isn't a car. Maybe there's a significant Porsche...maybe a 911? But the 911 IMHO isn't an 'important' car. It's a unique rear engined sports car out there all by itself; not a trend setter at all.

Too bad the entire point of this thread was lost on a few people. If you didn't want to add anything relevant, I'm not sure why you bothered posting.

Are people blinded by their love of Ferrari?

There are plenty of 'significant' Corvettes and Porsches... eg. any Gran Sport Corvette, perhaps a '63 split window, the ZR-1.

Porsches to me start at the 917K which Jerry Seinfeld owns... orange and blue Gulf Racing colours, number 20 and 22 if I recall.

Perhaps one of the Can-Am specials? Or the 956/962 Le Mans racers?

Holy crap I'm not the only one who noticed this. It's been apparent in multiple threads... im sorry but it just makes me sick. THERE ARE other desirable/significant cars out there rather than Ferraris people! Believe it or not!! No significant Corvette??? Such ignorance.. Oh my lord!!

I can't figure out what it was that caused it, but this thread went whizzing right by a bunch of people's heads. Being that I did not create it I cannot speak for the author, but my 100% best educated guess is that he was asking for YOUR personal opinion on what YOUR personal ultimate cars are. He didn't even specify it to have to be a car with 4 wheels... ultimate collectible vehicles... motorcycles, cars, planes, boats, whatever

It certainly is not a popularity contest, nor does the car have to quality under and conditions such as reaching 100mph... Hell, for someone an cherished collectable may be a '69 Beetle... who cares!

For those who have jumped shipped on the topic, I recommend you go back and read the original post. Many thanks. :)

Kevin - well said! So in keeping in the spirit of the original author's post, here are the cars I'd like in MY collection:

    Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale coupe
    Ferrari 250GT Lusso
    Ferrari 400 Superamerica Aerodynamico
    Ferrari 250GTE/330 America/330 2+2/365 2+2 (not sure which I like best yet!)
Maserati A6G coupe or spider of some sort
Bugatti (any Bugatti - love those engines!)
    Lancia Flaminia Zagato
    Alfa Romeo Sprint Zagato
    Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale
    Aston Martin DB4
    Lotus Elite
    Ginetta G12

Oh hell - there are just too many to list, and I'm not including the really incredible cars that I don't see ever being able to afford!
