walmart! seriously?

I am not a US resident so pardon my ignorance but today the newspaper had some really strange photographs from Walmart shoppers.
I did google the case and it seems that everyone who shops there is a little "wacky".
What's the story behind this?
Is this a trend? Is it a costume contest with prizes?
I can not get it.
Can someone explain?

U.S Walmarts are filled with strange people. Mostly trailer park trash. Here in Canada, its actually a good store to shop.

 

So to my understanding as as far as what I have seen in the internet, it is not some sub culture or anything like that, it is just people that are strange and possibly can be found in other places also.
We sure have our share of weirdness in our little place in the world (like our former minister of economy who participated in the parliament with a crazy shirt http://i100.independent.co.uk/image/1104-1bytc1m.jpg but walmart is beyond any logic.
Actually thats what the newspaper said, that the minister was dressed in walmart haute couture and that's why I searched it.

I did try the Walmart in my American cottages town. It was a dump, worse then a dollar store. Can't believe its a multi billion dollar company. Normal people didn't seem to shop there. Here in Canada, they are more upscale, yuppies with trailer park trash mixed in. I buy a lot of deli meats. The Safeway is a 15 minute drive each way, Walmart is 5 minutes and they carry the same deli meats brands. So I do shop Walmart in Canada, basically daily.

 

In our area of the southern U.S., Wal-Marts are nearly in every town and the cheap prices appeal to the migrant workers and families that are usually at, or below, the median household income level. In many cases, these individuals are also largely uneducated. I detest going to Wal-Mart because of the chaos and confusion that is typically present both in the parking lot as well as the store.

 

I should also mention, in my area, we don't have many grocery store options. Its a store called Great Canadian Superstore, Save On Foods, another discount place (all discount retailers), Safeway and Walmart. Safeway and Walmart are the best options. Oh forgot about Costco, but I don't consider them for groceries. Next town over does have a place called Urban Faire, its like Whole Foods, but its a drive for me. 99% of my groceries are pop, bread and deli meats. I get take out for dinner 99% of the time. If its meats, I'll go to Urban Faire.

Oh I skip Walmart on the third Wednesday of the month. Its when the bums get their welfare checks, the store is then packed with low income people.

 

Hey Chip...Where are you in Mississippi? I used to live in Memphis, and there like here, Wal-Mart seems to reflect the neighborhood it is in. Some here in DFW seem positively upscale, especially new super centers, while others, umm, not so much. I think time of day also matters. I remember one Wal-Mart the wife & I stopped in at in El Paso at 2 AM on one of our road trips, some interesting characters! Ourselves included after about 10 hours in the car!

Zud,I'm amazed..you do not do Costco groceries..that has to be rare..Costco is massive in whatever market they reside. I go way out of my way to shop there,but I'm sure you have your reasons,like you don't buy groceries you buy prepared foods,ready to heat and eat items,but even for that they are good stuffs. Is there something else? Quantities,maybe?

I think average Costco crowd is more upscale than typical Wal-Mart customer but that's a guess. But, one thing they have in common, if my wife is going to go to either, I'm looking for an excuse not to go with her. That being said, it's hard to beat Costco for quality meat at a good price, especially if you don't mind doing a small bit of butchering yourself...T

Don't have Lidl in U.S. But, we do have Aldi, which have cheap prices from what little I've seen of them, but the quality of their food items also seems low...T

Hello Tom! I live on the Gulf Coast, near the Biloxi/Gulfport area, if you are familiar with it. I'm about halfway between New Orleans and Mobile, AL. The Wal-Mart on Hwy 49 in Gulfport was recently almost closed because of so many health violations. Corporate sacked most of the managers and brought in new people. They've cleaned it up some, but it's still pretty dirty.

 

They just opened a Costco in Mobile, AL and my wife and I shop there a couple times a month to stock up on smoked salmon, organic beef and organic chicken. It sure beats the prices at Whole Foods and the $55 membership price keeps the typical Wal-Mart riff-raff away.

 

Yep. Wife and I vacationed more than a few times in that neck of the woods, when we lived in Memphis, both before and after the hurricane...T

 

Costco is great, but the quantities are too large for one person. I can't eat that much alone. A few years ago I was a Costco vendor (apple juice). Costco set a bunch of parameters and if you didn't meet them, they would reject entire shipments. One was temp the product had to be at delivery, one degree warmer and the entire shipment was rejected. Their quality control is above all others. No other store cared, even Whole Foods.

 

Wife and I are in same situation, so we freeze meats after breaking them down into meal sized amounts. Their wine selection and prices seem good to me. Other groceries, it's just too much of it for us since the mother in law eats like a bird, and their dog food is not good enough for our four-legged princess.

I stay out of Walmart at all costs if I can. Surprised nobody has mentioned Target on this thread...here in NC they're not quite as common as Wally World, although they carry the same stuff and all, but somehow they don't feel like a dump inside.

I do some pre=made frozen Costco stuff. They don't sell wine here. The government just changed the liquor laws a few months ago. Will allow grocery stores to sell beer and wine. The store has to build a liquor store inside the store. But the WA stores do.

Target only lasted a few months here. They pulled out of Canada. Couldn't compete with Walmart.

 

So has anyone ever seen a Ferrari parked outside of a Wal-Mart?

I have not, but I have seen a photo of a P1 outside of a Winn Dixie. Those little grocery stores are even smaller than Wal-Mart and are sprinkled around the south.
