I've seen Lewis Hamilton referred to as 'Elton' by his detractors on this forum for a while now. What's the reason / background to this?

So, is it just a reference to Elton John, a similar flamboyant dresser, or is there something more sinister behind the joke?

It's derived from the phonetics of his name:

    Hamilton ~ Hamelton ~ `Elton

There's also his, shall we say... flamboyant hairstyles and unique fashion sense that lended the comparison to Sir Elton John's image. However, I believe that was secondary to a shortened version of his name.

Shortening family names by one or two syllables is a very British thing. When I was in the equivalent of highschool over here, most were known by an abbreviated form of their surname - particularly if you had a very common first name in our year such as Andrew, Matt, John, Paul, Stephen/Steven, or Dan.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

And it was a quick acronym for 'Eventual Loser TO Nico'. (I suppose this was a reference to the 2016 WDC).

TBH, I'm not a fan of Eltov.

I guess people who use it think it's an insult and by using it Hamilton's course of life would be redirected perhaps to a less fruitful end....?
