Hi, I was told by a F -specialist that most of the wing shields are just the self adhesive thick badges is this so and are they acceptable .
They are not the proper ones. The proper ones were put in at the factory. The fenders had indents in them to put the shields in.
The original factory wingshields are proper enamelled badges, which are "sunk" into the wing when the car is manufactured. Although these are available from Ferrari, they are most definately not a retro fit (unless they were originally fitted when the car was new) I fear the type you are thinking of, is the plastic self adhesive variety, also available from Ferrari, but are a poor substitute for the original!
I have recently seen a set of metal wing badges that are thinner than the factory enamel type that are now available which you can also just stick on.. They look so much better than the resin, plastic type. Andy.aka muph7355. can you give us some more info on these as you da man!!. Jaz.
Thinner enamel ones are available from http://gallery.bcentral.com/GID5103105-Home.aspx I'm waiting for htem to make 550 items but for now have the resin, they look OK IMHO
These are the ones: http://gallery.bcentral.com/GID5103105P3540988-Ferrari-Scuderia-Fender-Shields/Scuderia-Shield-360-Modena/Ferrari-Scuderia-Shields-Type-B.aspx
I agree that the factory ones are the best, and that the resin stick on ones are a relatively weak imitation of the real thing (even though both are sold by Ferrari). The enamel stick on ones are a good half measure and I bet they look great (I've never seen any in the flesh but have seen plenty of pics). Personally however I couldn't bring myself to pay that much money (circa $350) for a pair of stick on enamel badges. I have magnetic backed resin stick on badges on mine so if I ever get sick of them I can just remove them. Cost about four quid each including the magnetic backing. Lots of people have the resin ones. Nothing wrong with them in my opinion. Ric.
I saw a set of the thin enamel stick on badges at Verdis when I was last down there, Karl may start supplying them soon from what I can understand. The difference between the enameled and the resin items is night and day. Murph7355 described it best I think when he said the resin ones look all washed out in the colour dept. Having said that I stuck a set of the £4 resin jobs on my car, so what do I know???
Andy (Murph7355) is right in as much as the original resin ones were washed out, the more recently supplied items are a much closer colour match
Thanks Jaz et al, but it's Nero308 who's the fella to thank. I just took a punt and coughed up. Worth it though. The enamel shields look the absolute nuts. Not only are the plastic ones washed out, they also look awfully like....blown vinyl plastic stickers (Eric - unpeel them now and stop being a tight arse). The original, sunk in jobs (which are, incidentally, available from a chap on here called Paul Bianco - who I will also be giving some custom when I leave sunny Nippon as the thicker variety will make a nicer ornament for indoors!) still stick out of the indentation. In fact, I don't think there'll be much in it between the originals sunk in and these sat on the wing. Honestly, and I know it sounds mad, but if you like the "shield fender" look, these really are worth the cash. Given a choice of the resin shields or nothing, I'd go unadorned. Kylie Minogue should not be seen out in her slippers wearing white polyester socks and a shell suit, after all! It's naked or dressed smart.
Whilst I would be the last to doubt you Mark, I have yet to see a resin sticker that either doesn't look rubbish straight out of the Pannini bag, or doesn't look that way 5mins after being out in daylight. But I stand to be corrected with some photos of them attached to the wing of yours - the enamel ones are going to look truly superb on the Maranello! How's the Caterham rebuild? And what the heck are you doing swapping them so often
Andy I know the earlier ones were a very washed out and I was nervous of putting them on the 550, infact the Dealer wasn't sure either so offered to supply them rather than fit, in the end when I picked the car up they had fitted them and I must admit I like them, there's no doubt they are a much deeper yellow than they used to be, I'll dig out a hi-res and post I'm sure it'll look even better when the 1/2 depth enamel ones are on On the 7 I'm still waiting for the Chassis from Arch, it's due to me on 17th then to TSK for paint and rebuild from there! nice though, we reckon the new motor could be good for around 255BHP
Is it a VX? Lost track as I think you've had one of each engine variant made haven't you Apologies for the thread hijack wl, but it reminds Mark to post his photos!
Haha! I must admit when I saw the enamel jobbies I immediately said I would have a pair. It does seem a bit cheapskate paying large wedge for the car and sticking a £4 sticker on the side. Only thing I was thinking is are they a one size fits all thing, or 355 only? ie the curve of the fender is obviously different on the 355, 360, 550 etc etc, and with them not being exactly flexible will they fit the contour exactly? BTW Andy, still owe you a beer for your help when I was looking at cars, be sure to drop me a PM when you return from the land of the rising sun, and I will bring the vinyl badged wonder vehicle out for a blast!
