http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/07/11/la.shootout.ap/index.html hope this wasnt posted already today i quickly checked P&R and here and didnt see a thing. Anyways, I cant believe something like this actually happened. Im at a loss for words. Read the article and you know exactly what im talking about...
dude all i just saw was gunman, baby die in shoot out and thats all i wanted to see. it freeks me out when reading stuff about babys and kids dieing before they even get a fair chance at life. i wont read stuff like that, hell , no way.
Nice. Another fine example of parents placing their children before themselves...(please don't miss out on the sarcasm there)...F-ing pitiful. I'm sick of these people. If he did what is alleged, he deserves to have been shot to hell.
I did not read the story either. I read the headline and closed the browser window. In fact, the only time I've ever closed a browser window faster is when I unknowingly clicked on a link to the "tub girl." I'm with John, this stuff is just plain depressing. I refuse to watch TV news. I will listen to the radio, but never any political shows. I read the newspaper to find out what's going on in the world.
For an officer, that is quite possibly the worst decision to ever be faced with. It was a terrible event. Unfortunately, all of the "neighbors" that they interviewed in the articles I read were retards who can't understand some fundamentals. Incredibly, this is supposedly only the second lost hostage in over 4,000 LAPD SWAT operations. It is difficult not to be emotional about it though. My condolences to the mother, and to the officers who did what they had to do, and now will have to bear their own anguish over it.
Isn't this what mace, tazers, and bean bags are for? Why couldn't they put this guy down w/o this deadly force? Where does all our tax dollars go?
What are you going to do with mace? Some guys shooting at you, and you're going to try to aim a tazer at him. Or try shooting at him with a bean bag. Our tax dollars are getting wasted trying to help these sons of a *****es when a single 9mm could fix it. In the back of the head, while he's on his knees.
Wth all due respect, if the guy was actively shooting at the police, those non-lethal weapons would be way out of effective range. Bullets flying at police can easily miss and kill innocents. A decision had to be made..whether it was the correct one will, i'm sure, be heavily scrutinized in the days and weeks to come. Nothing good could come of this, it's just a matter of how big the tragedy was going to be.
I don't know if you both read the story so let me clarify my point. I agree that when someone is shooting at you, you must defend yourself by any means possible. I believe there was an opportunity before shots were fired to use non-lethal weapons. Police grade mace (or pepper spray) should put someone down. In this case a tazer was prob. the best choice.
Deadly force should always be a last resort, but it seems many times it is used way too early. Would it not have been possible to contain the man without risk to the police? Surely he wasn't going anywhere. If they had placed body armored swat officers within distance of all exits, the guy would have stayed there. Then, he would either eventually come down from his high, or pass out, or fall asleep, or open himself up to a clean shot from a sniper. I don't think the girl had to die. Cops make harsh decisions way too often. I've seen chases on TV that should have been called off WAY earlier, and I've seen worse than that. They are there to serve and protect the public, not just other officers. The question should be asked - was there anything else that could have been done that would have prevented these two people from dying, and also brought the guy to justice? If the answer is yes, then someone needs held accountable.
I was a bit taken back by this story when I heard LAPD SWAT was on the scene. Frankly, I envisioned the ordinary beat cops unloading their weapons making an already horrific situation worse. They have a reputation, an MO. What I didnt expect was SWAT in the middle of the shooting. D Platoon is the best of the best, SWAT officers come from all over to learn from these guys. I couldn't beleive they lost a hostage, they guys are trained for these types of situations, but to slip up like that? I wasn't there, I'm not going to play armchair tactician. What's to come in the next few days should be interesting.
I read my post again, without knowing who wrote it and I though, wow that guy's an *******. Sorry about the harshness of my last post. I did read the story, over and over again from a multitude of sources from google news as well. I'm sure lethal weapons were used, over and over as well, but this guy came out a'blazing. What are we to do? Plus, Tazer's are really poor choices, the needles could've struck the baby which would've resulted in the same thing.
Very sad... When I hear things like this, I often wonder if our being here on Earth is perhaps actually a Hell in itself? No matter what we do and how perfect things could be...we'll always have horrific tragedies such as this. I'm gonna go hug & kiss my kids before turning in, nite all.... - S
