I'm trying to establish the meaning of 'IDRIZ'. This appeared on the side/wings of a number of Ferraris including the 250 TdF Zagato S/N 0665 #441 and also the 500 TR S/N 0698 MDTR #451 during this event. Was it a form of early advertising (if so what for?) or promotion of some sort? Any thoughts or ideas.
    Many thanks
    John

You mean 0608 MDTR and not 0698 MDTR (that was a 500 TRC). AFAIK the company IDRIZ was a personal sponsor of Gino Munaron at the time, also of Camillo Luglio. IDRIZ was a company specialised in the production of effervescent digestive powders.

You are correct. I do mean 0608MDTR. Photo was incorrectly labelled. The additional information is most interesting. An early form of sponsorship.

Sponsorhip had appeared on Pan American cars in the 1950's but was unusual in Europe. Was this one of the first attempts at non motoring sponsorship?

At the 1957 MM diverse Maserati spyders sported a large BUITONI sticker on the fenders.

IDRIZ was a brand of the Carlo Erba the main Italian pharmaceutical industry at that time.
The most popular product were the IDRIZ powders, that transformed the common water in sparkling water.

    Ciao

    . BUITONI was/is a pasta-company.

    Another sponsorship-event:

In the Cuban GP 1957 ESSO was a main sponsor. Almost all cars had their logo painted on their front fenders.

CASTROL was the main sponsor for the Interlagos-races in 1957 and their logo was also clearly visible on all cars.

    Ciao!

A lot of cars in the Carrera Panamericana had some sort of sponsorship, starting with the first race. One car (can't remember exactly what it was or the year) was sponsored by a bra company!

Olivetti (mainly a typewriter company at that time) also was a sponsor of many Alfas both in Europe and on the Carrera.

0608 MDTR was totally destroyed July 1958 during practice for the Bolzano-Mendola HC.
