Friends: I was hoping to take my 2002 575M (FHP) out to dinner
on New Years Eve, and I went about two blocks before the
dreaded "Gearbox Failure" icon (bottom of page 2.13 in my
owners manual) appeared on the dash.

The car immediately went to a "limp home" mode,
and would only offer 1st and 2nd gears. Most of the dash
indicators disappeared - including the "selected gear" indicator.

The car ran fine in these two gears, and reverse was still available.

I immediately returned home, and was force to take my Lexus out.

When I checked the car this afternoon, and everything
was normal - all gears, NO error codes !

It is nice that the car has healed itself, but I worry this
might happen again when I am out of town.

    Can anybody offer suggestions ?

    2002 575M.......sn13042x......assy. number 47614.

    Thanks in advance,

    Scott

Do not pay any attention to anyone who wants you to turn the battery off. All that can possibly achieve is to make it more difficult to diagnose.

Some people have the proper equipment to work on the and a very few people are capable of diagnosing and fixing the. Find someone who fits both descriptions and take it to them asap.

I'd be happy to suggest who that might be you have chosen to be secretive about where you live.

There have been threads about this sort of issue before and whilst not wishing to pre-empt the above recommendation it could be as simple as a loose reverse lever which is why as the wear gets worse or the pins break there is a simple upgraded Hills lever - my point is only to try to reassure that it may not be a significant issue

Thanks, I very much appreciate that advice.

I had not visited the site in a while,
and the search function does NOT work for me.

Likewise, my ROSSA subscription seems to have disappeared.....

Like Brian said, take it to someone who knows what they are doing and has an SD2 or equivalent to diagnose the problem. Also have them do an F1 service where they change out the F1 fluid, bleed the system, do a self-test, check for leaks, and optimize PIS. Note below that Ferrari finally figured out the F1 system needs regular maintenance and fluid changes.

    Thanks for chiming in Taz......

I see that I am advised to at least check
the fluid level in the F1 hydraulic shifting mechanism,
which is in total 1 liter.

My 2002 manual calls out for FIAT TUTELA CS SPEED,
which I have never heard of !

Are we using something else nowadays ?

Of course, since I am owner #4,
I have no idea what is actually in there.........

There is no Ferrari service within 5 hours,
so I am kind of on my own.....

If I got a big jug of suitable fluid, and drained
and refilled repeatedly, how many changes might
I have to do to "clean" the system, and be running
well enough to drive to the nearest dealer ?.....

I do not believe this is a DIY and I try to do DIY any time it is feasible. It requires an SD2 to really do the job. I had a leak in one of the hoses and had the job done by Ferrari guy about an hour away.

Brian Crall should be able to provide a name for you.

I use Tutela CS Speed, which is now produced by Petronas. It is expensive at ~$50/liter here in the States, but has been worth it. One thing you can do is change out half of it at a time without introducing air into the system, but that will not eliminate air that is already in there. Eventually it will get rid of some contamination. My techs swap out half every year and every three years they do the full fluid change and bleed. Note this involves removing the actuator to get at the bleed screws, so somebody really needs to know what they are doing and have the SD2 equivalent tool. My techs use Auto Enginuity, which ran about $3500 when I bought it for them.

Ricambi carried Tutela CS Speed for a while. You might check with them. Every time I see some, I buy a couple.

    Thank you Taz.

Can you offer where to get the Petronas equivalent,
and also what an SD2 tool is ?

SD2 stands for System Diagnosis 2 (translated from the Italian), the factory analysis tool for Ferraris through about the 575 and 360. Earlier Ferraris used an SD1 and later ones an SD3 before it all went online.

Check with Daniel at Ricambi and see if he still carries the Tutela CS Speed. I find it in weird places, although it is easy to find in Europe. Do not have a current source since I have a stash of several year's worth.
