Hello all. Preparing to remove the drivetrain from my 348 spider. Have completed all the disconnect/ removal tasks with the exception of the ECU connections. Looking for advice.
I have removed the interior panel covering the ECU boxes. Appear the connectors are large pin type that have a clamp to release then disconnect. Correct? The “mouse” motors appear close. Problem/ Interference?
After disconnecting the ECU’s, feed through the firewall? I am not clear on this task.
    Detailed advice is welcome.
I admit to being a bit paranoid regarding all the electrical connections. Do not want to drop the drivetrain without disconnecting everything correctly.
    Thanks for the help.

Yes, Unplug all wiring that comes through firewall and feed through hole into engine bay. Do for both engine banks.
Take your time with this, takes a little skill to pass through the hole. Just remember feed only one connector at a time.

Good luck and best regards, Jim

Thank you Jim, powertrain is out with no issues. Fed the connector as you detailed. Lowered powertrain to allow more access and fed the connector all the way through. Now the real work begins. John

ATA BOY!!!!!! Way to go spider348! Now that you have taken the engine out, tell me, do you really think that the dealers can justify charging $6,000.00 to do that? I don't think so. Another little bit of advice. When you take any nuts, bolts, or screws out put them back in were you took them off. This way you don't loose them and you know exactly were they go.

I am almost done. I have some parts that have been at the powder coating shop for two weeks. I should be getting them back tomorrow. But other than that it is ready to go back together. All the seals, O-rings, bearings, and valve adjusting was finished in September. I should have been done with this thing months ago. I have been working so much that I haven't really had time to finish it. My wife has been getting on me about it. But like I said I'm just waiting for the parts to get back from the shop, then I put it back together. Oh by the way, do you know were I can get some new plug wires at a reasonable price? My #2 and #3 wires are shot. I'm just gonna get a whole new set. But I am not gonna pay the insane price the dealer wants.

    Spider,
I'm interested to hear your reply to Earnie's question!
My 348 is in an indipendent specialists here in the uk as i write , i have only owned the car for 18 months and it had a cambelt service 1 year before i bought it so the guy has advised i don't need to do the belts until next service in 6/7 months they have quoted 26 hours work @ £50 per hour plus 17.5% tax, is this a reasonable time estimate. I'm so impressed you guys have a go yourselves . I have a garage and a good range of tools/eqipment at home is this enough, do i need any thing more?
I have a porsche that i don't mind tinkering with but i confess i'm pretty scared of the F-car!!
I never considered doing a drop myself!!
And sorry if this comes out strange it's my first post on the new format

The shop that quoted you 26 hours of laybor is right on the money, and 50 quid an hour is a reasonable rate. But that is if they are including the valve adjustments in the laybor. If they aren't, subtract 6-8 hours of work. I was being a smart ass when I asked him what he thought of the dealer rates. If you have done work on cars before you can work on your engine. All it takes is patience, tools, and some good advice.

Ernie is correct. I estimate my time will be at least 2x the dealer quoted estimate due to: 1. Inexperience resulting in added time to check, double check and check again. 2. The “While I am there” disease. Small repairs, cosmetic upgrades, cleaning etc while I am there. 3. Added care you devote to the car as an enthusiast owner. 4. Cleaning up all the prior errors from earlier services etc.
I find the 348 relatively easy to work on. Powertrain removal was nowhere near as difficult as I envisioned. 348 motor is actually simpler than a 911. The 911 motor includes separate barrels, heads, split case etc.
    Just my humble opinion.

Just got the car back...got just 11 more days to enjoy it then i have to kiss it goodbye for a couple of months and fly back to work :( ..
Think the price was inc valves but not fluid change...add 6 hours!
6,000 service plus look at electrics prob ...£814.
needs a new left side door loom though, sort it soon.
i have a time prob so think i'll just have to pay for belt service in July but i will have a go on the next one , i also have your 'while i'm there' problem Spider!
