    Hey guys,
I have a Mondial 3.2 cab with the most unusual of problems. When I drive for very extended periods of time, say over 100-130 miles, the car occasionally becomes very difficult to get into any gear from rest. The gears do not grind or anything, the feeling is more akin to when you try to put the car into second when cold. We have bled the clutch hydraulic system, and there is still adequate clutch life left.

Any thoughts? It is a very difficult problem for my mechanic to diagnose, because it would require him to drive my car all day before the problem would even surface. Until the 50 mile mark, the car shifts like butter, and gets only occasionally mildly notchy until the 70-100 mile mark.

    Any thoughts?

That's an intriguing problem and I'm curious as to what the cure will be.

I had a TR-8 with the same issue; turned out that the transmission fluid was low and it wasn't upgraded to ATF as per the factory. Thus, the trans was overheating.

So, how's the temps reading and is the fluid low warning circuit working as well?

The temps are fine and I have checked and changed the transmission oil twice. Oil looks perfect and there is no sign of engine oil seeping in.

Oh , and here is another interesting twist. I don't have to do the mileage consecutively. If I drive 60 miles, park for a couple of hours and resume...same problem once I hit the magic 130+ number!!!!

The only thing that really resets the clock is to let the car sit overnight.

It is a really bizarre problem.

Same thing happened to me. 86 Mondial Cab. I'm not a mechanic, so I might not explain it too well. My mechanic found it during my 30K service. There's a seal of some sort (I think 2 actually) that keeps the trans fluid appart from I think the engine oil. And there's a visual inspection port to see if the trans fluid is clear or not. Apparently engine oil can mix with the trans fluid if the seal is bad. And I think it happens at first when the seal starts to go and the cars been driving for awhile and the trans fluid is hot. That's the exact syptom I had and it's gone now. My trans fluid was really dark. Good luck and let me know if this makes any sense at all............Lou

Hmmmm. We have checked and changed the gear oil a couple of times it appeared fine. But it is interesting that you experienced the same symptoms as I have. I will discuss your diagnosis with my mechanic.

    Thanks for responding!

Not sure on a Mondial, does the clutch use brake fluid for operation like in the TR.. if so maybe your brake fluid is boiling and causing your clutch to fade.. I had a problem in my Testarossa that when she got hot or was running on a hot day it felt like the clutch was fading.. turns out fluid was boiling causing this.. Sometimes there are some things that are in the vacinity of the clutch fluid line that adds heat causing it to boil easier.. Just a thought.. As I said I am not sure if the clutch fluid works off the brake master cylinder / resovoir.. does not hurt to flush out your fluid and replace with some top quality brake fluid and check your fluid lines going to the clutch..

Joe, my guess would be that your shifting issue is related to heat (not mileage). I can't recall if the shift linkage on a 3.2 mondial has a rubber link in it - if it does then it's very possible that the rubber warms up and becomes more pliable....and less able to positively locate the shifting. In other words, you shifting adjustment may be marginal when cold....but get worse as the car (ie. the rubber link) gets warmer and less able to locate the forks properly.

I'd recommend you (or your mechanic) going through the shift linkage adjustment procedure very meticulously for a first step. I'd bet that'll solve it.

    Good luck!

Just checked my receipt. One of 2 things.....

1: The seals I was referring too earlier. Both were replaced in mine and were hard as rocks. Shift shaft seals....he charged parts $29.10 apiece

2: Clutch Slave Cylinder He charged 1/2 labor and the part was $350.

My car did what your describing. After driving an hour or so, very hard to downshift....if not impossible. Also hard to shift other gears. After cooling it was fine...

    I hope this helps.............Lou

Brake/clutch fluid issue is interesting, maybe Dot 4 if you are using Dot 3? Relatively cheap to do and with the convertible maybe bleed through rear seat. Typically that issue is when the clutch is worn but you've addressed that. Weak pressure plate? The pressure plate gets hot and the springs may loose some tension with the heat soak. Did you replace clutch and all related parts at the same time?

I have a new clutch slave cylinder and the shift shaft seals are not leaking according to my mechanic. I am going to take your suggestions to my mechanic and get his thoughts.

I am thinking it may be something to do with the pressure plate, Because it takes SOOOO long before things return to normal---meaning it would seem it is related to metal changing under heat, rather than a liquid boiling. I would imagine if it was a liquid than, when I came out to my car after a couple of hours and the water/oil temp has return to low, that the problem would disappear-but it doesn't, it takes a whole night..

The whole argument between liquids/water/metals and how much heat they retain is a bit complicated. Water for example, takes much more energy input to raise its temperature (per gram) by 1 deg C of liquid compared to steel....in fact, water has the capacity to hold nearly 10 times as much heat per gram as steel does and about 5 times that of aluminum. So on an equal mass basis, the metals should cool down quicker than the water.

Also, the metals conduct heat much better than water and probably more importantly here, they expand significantly with temperature. Shafts get longer, piston diameters get larger, mis-alignments get more exaggerated etc. To me, this is a long winded way of saying that it sounds like Cliff is on the right track .... i.e. shift linkage is not set up quite right.

To me, a bad pressure plate translates into one that either does not disengage fully or one that does not apply enough pressure to hold the clutch plate in place when engaged. Case one would result in the hard shifting you describe but I would think that you would also experience grinding of gears in concert with the effort. Case two results simply in a slipping clutch plate under power and in reality should make shifting an easier task. A worn out (thin) clutch plate would result in the same behavior.

One additional question that might help diagnose this problem....why was the clutch slave cylinder changed? Was it leaking or did your mechanic change it in response to this problem?

Thanks for the suggestion. This is kind of what my mechanic is thinking as well. I had Algar adjust the linkage already and they think it is now perfect. However, my mechanic is theorizing that the problem has something to do with either a rubber link in the linkage or some bizarre issue.

As for the pressure plate/clutch. Your theory jives with what my mechanic said. He agreed that I would be experiencing grinding or slipping if it was a problem with the clutch/pressure plate, and, as I said, I still have a lot of clutch life left. I am hoping you both were wrong, because its an easy fix :)

The clutch slave cylinder was replaced when I first got the car because it was beginning to leak. We have gone over the new system completely and there are no signs of any problems.

As for what you and cliff said, my biggest problem is trying to duplicate the problem. When the car is driven as much as 100, sometimes 150 miles there are no problems and apparently when under that magic number, the car's linkage, etc appear to be normal. How difficult would it be to replace that rubber part. At this point, to be honest, I am almost inclined to try everything and hope something sticks!

Thank you everyone and keep it coming.

I just need you to write me that check ;)
BTW, in reviewing my mileage logs (yes I keep detailed mileage logs, but that is for my therapist to deal with, not you guys :) ) it appears the problem doesn't begin to appear until around the 150 mile mark, and doesn't get problematic until the 180-200 mileage mark. Based on that, it would be extremely difficult to recreate the problem, while still getting it to my mechanic with enough time to actually get into it. If I can't do it, I am not above throwing parts at it until something sticks. Dave Helms & my mechanic gave me some excellent suggestions, in addition to what you guys have posted. I am not going to have the car for about a month while Karosserie repairs a dent in the rear caused by a woman deciding that paying attention while driving in a parking lot was a wasted effort. As soon as I get my girl back I will take her in--so keep those suggestions coming in the meantime.

BTW, I can rule out any leaking seals. The gear oil looked perfect and there are no leaks anywhere to be seen.

Hey Joe.........I'm feelin' bad for ya man. I truly hope you get the old girl fixed quickly. Summer driving isn't far away.

As for that Cali--------IMHO, it's not the looker that the 458 is but, it ain't no dog - fo sho !!!
I could get in, turn the key and fire up one of the most technologically advanced Ferraris to date. Also, I would be driving a real "head case" - - a car with dual personalities (models):):)

Good luck with those damn issues.

    Thanks Hank,

Me too. I almost needed to be institutionalized after that inconsiderate @#$%@#$ hit the car. Thankfully, the damage was very well contained and will easily be banged out. That being said, it will be in the shop for a month. As for shifting situation, its more of a nuisance than anything because I can count on one hand the amount of times I have driven her more than 100 miles in a day. The truth is, after about 2 hours of back road barnstorming, I want to take a nap :) However, the very fact that a problem exists at all is driving me crazy. I figure if I can get everything resolved by the end of May I will be happy.

Does the Mondi have two rubber links in the shifter like the 308s do? One just in front of the engine where it gets hot and oily and turns the rubber to goo and one just behind the shifter hidden under the center console right next to the radiator lines, so it doesn't get hot enough to cause any problems for at least 100+ miles?

Thanks for your advice. I took the car to my mechanic today, we opened the overflow plug and a quart and 1/2 of what appeared to be a mix of gear oil/engine oil poured out (it was darker than gear oil). Granted the engine was hot when we did this, but, that is still a lot of extra oil!

I am taking her in next week to have all of the seals and o-rings replaced. While I am not 100% sure this is the cause of my unusual shifting problem--it couldn't be helping it :) If not for your advice, I wouldn't have rechecked the gear oil, and wouldn't have found the failing seal.

    Keep your fingers crossed :)

    Thanks!!!!!

While doing those seals will be a great time to replace any rubber in the shifter rod. Good luck and keep us up to date.
