So a couple week ago I'm out for a drive when the Mondial just shuts down on the highway. A long and expensive story for another thread.

The flatbed shows up and the guy asks for the tow hook. No problem as its in the tool bag, not. Can't find it. I ordered a new one from Ricambi. Just tried it and it doesn't fit. It's too short.

Can someone measure their tow hook and let me know the proper length of the factory tow hook. Thanks.

Your 86 3.2 should be using the same tow hook as my 88.
    about 7.5 inches long
    about 1/2 inch width

    best,

Thanks for the photos. This hook is just under a half inch shorter. I'll take a better look at it in the morning. The loop was hitting the grill. I must be doing something wrong. Thanks.

Mine has its original as far as I know and it's too short too... I need to just have a local sailboat rigger make a slightly longer one cheap.

When it hits the grill it's threaded in only a few threads; not near enough to trust moving the car with.

That is how I've had my car towed several times without event. Mine does hit the grill as well after a few turns.

Interesting. Tried my tow hook as well, and it wouldn't fit.

Mine does not hit the grill, I can screw it all in and the hook space is good enough for a tow. Can you fellows measure your hook and see if its the same hook 7.5 inches... Not sure why they would make a shorter version unless its for another vehicle model.

RicambiAmerica has a 3.2 hook part #128705, wonder if this is like mine. It also says should fit 3.2 and T models.
Funny thing is I had my car towed once but never needed this hook, the flatbed was able to get it on board without any damage.

I just added my photo. It definately had a stepped portion for holding the tire in on mine. If I get the car out today I'll have to take the tire holder out and see if it fits. But first on the agenda is pulling the heads apart on my old motorcycle, been putting that off too long, but first walk the dog. Big day ahead :D

The tow hook on my 85 QV is 7 inches long and has the flange/washer welded at the loop end of the stud as in PV Dirk's picture at #8. I use the tow hook to hold the spare tire in place, as in #8.

The loop is also welded, rather than forged as in #7.

The stud flange does not touch the grille when it is screwed into the frame stud nut.

The stud seats tightly against the back end of the frame stud nut before the flange or loop reaches the grille.

I have discovered that my tire hold down does not fit my tow hook threaded opening. I don't have a tow hook. As my car came with every piece of literature, all records of service and has every tool, bulb and bit in place I'm thinking some cars did not come with a tow hook. This is my tire hold down. Or maybe the factory welded in the wrong bolt for the tow hook? Small production, pulling parts off shelves, etc, who knows.

My tow bolt looks exactly like #12. Same welds and color.

The tow bolt threads into the tow hook nut/bracket and also the spare tire securing nut.

The tow hook bolt bottoms against the diagonal frame brace behind the grille that the tow hook nut bracket is welded to.

I think if mine were 7" like yours, it would hit the grill and damage it. Interesting how its all different for these cars.

On mine it is close; there is about a 1/16" clearance between the grille and the flange.

    Hi,

Sorry for waking up this old tread - I will flat bed my car on Monday and realised I have for sure no Tow hook (there is no tool kit and no spare tyre in the car I bought) - do anyone know what thread it is on the tow hook?

I might be able to source a replacement, but if not, has anyone a tip on how to get the car without damage on to the flat bed without a tow hook...?

    Cheers, Niclas

When I first bought my car, I had a coolant hose bust and left me on the roadside. Called my insurance and they sent a flat bed. Never used the front tow hook, you won't need it. The driver should know how to hook it up using the front axles without damaging the front bumper lip to get the car on the truck. Ratchet straps will be used on the tires to secure the car to truck. But make sure you ask questions and watch what he does, they should know already as its their job not to damage these cars.

Hehe, yepp - the issue here is that the driver will be me... (!) :)

After some googling (that lead me back to this forum...) it seems that the 355 and 348 tow hook is M16 pitch 2, chances are that the Mondial has the same...

    Cheers, Niclas

    hahaha, you got me.

btw, the part#128705 [128705 MONDIAL TOW HOOK] is same thread as
    Challenge Style Towing Eye (M16 x x1.5, for 360, 430 and Testarossa).

    good luck

My '83 QV also has the threaded opening in the grill, and the spare tire bolt like PV Dirk, see the pictures. The bolt looks very much like a double for the tow hook, but the thread doesn't match, I can only give it like 3 turns, so that won't do.
Strange thing is that on the Ricambi page the tool-kit for a QV does not mention a tow hook, but I suspect the 128705 TOWING HOOK does fit. I am asking Daniel at Ricambi...

Maybe a little late for an answer, but a lot of Driver's will not use the tow hook, they will use nylon towing slings. I have a set in each one of my cars. They are inexpensive to buy. Just find a rigging company and they will make them for you. Also would trust the tow hook? in a 25 plus year. here is a picture of them you needto scroll down.

Thanks for all the tips, I managed to fashion a tow hook replacement that worked well.

I called the local Ferrari dealer and the guy in the garage suggested that I use the link arms for loading it to the tow truck...

Anyone know if the tow eye for a Mondial T is the same as an 85 QV? There doesn't seem to be a QV tow eye part on any part chart I can find. My local Ferrari dealer couldn't find one either. Ferrari said my year didn't appear to come with a tow eye even though I have a toe eye socket in the grill. BTW, Is there a toe eye socket in the rear of the car? I can't locate it and there is no mention in the owners manual.
