Started my shift shaft seal replacement yesterday. Removed the gas tank shield, oil pan and trans.pan had to stop for the day to let all the oils drain off, I was getting dripped to death lol. I got a replacement kit from T. Rutlands part # 115372K there is everything you need in it. Stuff I didn't even know I needed!!! The price was good to only $ 113.79 shipped to the house.

Sounds good. Do you have any pics you can post of the process?

Here are some pictures to catch up on what I did so far. The only problem i ran into was getting the oil pan off. The nut that holds the dip stick in so you can remove the extension tube. I had to use a 1 1/16" crows foot ( see picture) to get it off. The bolt at the top was easy form inside the car.

    Hi Robert

What exactly is the shift shaft seal? Is that the same as the gear linkage seal that goes into the engine?

Reason I ask is that I have an oil leak where the gear linkage goes into the engine. I was quoted approximately $375 in USD by Ferrari which includes parts and labour and figured it's a good price. From what I have read it's a common problem.

Does anyone know if it's harmful to drive as it is?

    Thanks.

I put 3000 miles on my car with this problem it's just an oil leak. My car used vary little oil. But I kept thinking what if the seal would blow out when I was far from my house!
If Ferrari told you $375 USD to fix it ---take it!!!! The only thing is has anyone gone to a Ferrari dealer got a quote for a job and only paid that.

I just looked up the part number you mentioned 115372 and the seal is only about $10 at eurospares but is not the kit form you mentioned, i couldnt find that number with the K suffix as you wrote and i just looked it up on T. Rutlands and see there are quite a few extra seals and gaskets in the kit which explains the cost of $135 for the parts.

I took the car to Ferrari (not an independent) and was quoted $375 USD all inclusive. There was a discount for it being a classic car which was an hourly labour rate reduction, not the parts. There are many independent Ferrari specialists here and therefore lots of competition and Ferrari can lose a lot of money by not competing with the older cars. When i had my 911, Porsche would always try to match the independent specialists to create business too.

I also have an oil cooler leak which may be just the hoses but soon as the weather improves i will be taking it in for the work to be done.

    Good luck with the repair!

I got some good pictures of the shift shaft before I take it off. I will put some small witness marks on the shaft before removing it. Only because my car shifted great before I started this. Hope it will when I'm done!!! Also when I removed the trans. pan there should be front hole 1 ball, 1 spring, spring cup and spacer ( I did not have the spring cup ) middle hole and rear hole 1 ball and 1 spring. Its going back in the way it came out.

I am posting the last pictures of my shift shaft seal replacement. All went good and I have all my gears and no leaks LOL. I would say that doing this job without a lift kind of took some the fun out of it. The only thing I would point out was a press I made out of a 1/2" drive 7/8" socket (see picture) so I could peen the retainer ring back in. I tried to install the new seal without removing it but would have damaged the cup seal. I made a gauge and put a witness mark on the shaft before removing it.

You have to tilt the engine oil pan and maneuver it in. Also the small pipe for the dipstick has to be out and fitted after the pan has been fitted.

I just had this job, as part of a major service, done on my car by an independent, in the work order it states they had to loosen the engine mounts and raise the engine to facilitate the work being done. That might explain why you're having a tough time getting the pan back in.

    This is definitely NOT necessary.
