The final Ferrari penned under Enzo Ferrari’s watchful eye, the F40 was created to celebrate 40 years of the brand’s greatness. In true Ferrari style, it does just that, with no-holds-barred performance that’s barely tame enough for the streets.

Styled by Pininfarina, the car’s 1-piece, Formula 1-inspired body is bonded to a tubular steel chassis that creates immense rigidity. At the center of that 3,018lb shell, a longitudinally-mounted V8 utilizes dual overhead cams, twin turbochargers and electronic engine-management to spool 478 horsepower. That power flows through a 5-speed manual transmission, which, given the engine’s impressive 7750rpm redline, allows the car to hit 90mph in second gear and achieve a top speed of over 200mph. Inside the sparse and purposeful interior, competition-spec seats join air conditioning as the only extraneous comforts. And outside of that cockpit, it’s all Rosso Corsa all the way!

As one of the first production cars to break the 200mph barrier, the F40 offered enthusiasts a thrill unlike any they’d ever experienced. The cars full-throttle acceleration can only be described as brutal. Although faster supercars have been built in the 28 years since, not many machines can duplicate the F40’s balanced, analog driving characteristics. And given its status as the final Ferrari to gain Enzo’s seal of approval, that seems most appropriate.
