You have $20k to spend, maybe a smidge more but that's it. You need something with 4 seats that can carry 2 small children. It must be a manual transmission, fun to drive, up to autocrossing and maybe an occasional track day, and above all, reliable. Ideally it will also be upgradeable, fun to modify.

What would you buy? New or used.

    My short list:
    Porsche 911
    Subaru WRX
    Mini Cooper S
    VW GTI

I've had a 911 and I loved it, current leading contender. I drove a WRX the other day and it was a riot to drive, just not sure about the ricer looks. Any other ideas?

Some I'm looking at: (don't laugh)

Scion xB (obviously for its quirky good looks and capacity -- its got tons of room -- not for its racing potential)

Hyundai Tiburon 03+ -- the best looking coupe < $20K IMO!

Volvo V70R == tons of room, safe, AWD, and quick!

I have a WRX wagon. Enough room for all my stuff and AWD (a must in the Northeast)

Interesting. No comment on the Scion :) and having recently worked at a Hyundai dealership, I would never buy one. Good looks, but too many problems. The Volvo is nice, hadn't thought about that one, but are they available in 5sp?

Under or close above $20K are some great 2+2s
    Porsche 911 SC. Bulletproof.
    Ferrari 308GT4
    Ferrari Mondial 8
    Porsche 944
    Porsche 912E
    Porsche 356 B or C coupe
    Alfa Romeo 1750 0r 2000 GTV
    Datsun 280Z 2+2
Jaguar XKE Series 2 2+2 (reliable, OK, maybe a stretch, but a lot of car for the money...)
    BMW 318ti

    Just some ideas.

Look at Alfas! There not a Ferrari, but they are Italian. Just remember if it weren't for Alfa, Enzo might never have gotten a start!

Take a look at the Milano or the 164. Both can be had for well under $20k. Hell you could buy 2 or 3 Milanos for 20K.

the 164 is a great daily driver, but it is truely a european Saloon (sporty Luxury car) it's fast, and handles well on in the twisties, but it's by no means a track car.

The Milano on the other had makes a great daily driver and a good track car. Bwing an transaxle car the weith dist. is almost 50-50. But the styling of the milano is much more dated than the 164.

For half that 20K, you can get a top of the line Alfa Romeo 164. Save the rest of the money for the rare breakdowns. I had this car as my daily driver and was at 105,000 miles without any more problems than you would expect from any older car.
The car has a sweet V6, ABS, power everything, the A/C really works, seats up to 5, (4 in real comfort) etc, etc. You don't see them coming and going, either.

Beautiful picture. I had forgotten about Alfas, and I love the Milano. I wonder what the chances are of finding a nice Verde?

Ok your picture also got me thinking about a Mondial. I can probably find a Mondial 8 for my $20k target, any chance of finding a good QV for less than say $25k? And would it make a good driver? Tom B are you out there? :)

Nice car! Those are 17" OEM 1998 Alfa Spider Wheels. "Alfa Owner" has many similar at great prices. Ride comfort the same, handling (and looks) better. No downside at all.

I bet you can get a QV for 25K, but remember reliability and upkeep costs. As far as Milano, great car. Just make sure you like the unique looks of the Milano, as opposed to the looks of a 164, which is this:

Well, yes, it is one of my cars, and yes, it is for sale.

    My picks:

    1. 1987-89 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 (A fun, quirky, entertaining car that is reliable and has a surprising amount of utility for a sports car. Also they will, if properly maintained, last forever!)

    2. 1987-91 BMW E30 M3 (Need I say more?)

$20K can buy you an excellent example of either car.

"As an FYI: Hyundai Tiburon visually styled by, you guessed it, Pininfarina."

I prefer Pinin's auditory styling department. I JUST LOVE TO HEAR HOW THE CURVES of the car MESH together in an ORGANIC SYMPHONY THAT DELIGHTS BOTH THE HEART AND THE EARS.

    Pinin's VISUAL STYLING DEPARTMENT SUCKS.
