Michael Schumacher just set a debut lap record with the new F1 2004 car. With a total of seven laps being run and only four being timed Schumi set the record this morning at Fiorano. Forza Ferrari !

    Some trials are happy ones,
    Others are blue.
It's the way you ride the trial that counts,
Here's a happy one for you.

    Happy trials to you,
    Until we meet again.
    Happy trials to you,
    Keep smilin' until then.

Who cares about the clouds when we'ere together?
Just sing a song, and bring the sunny weather.

    Happy trials to you,
    Til we meet again.

last year the f2003ga was 1 second a lap faster than the 2002 and was said to be the best car out there. but they struggled through the entire season. i'm not going to assume anything until i see them in australia where the times really start to count.

I've learned not to take the practice times', from winter testing, to have a direct correlation to the racing season.

I’ve been so disappointed in the past years, that I’ve stopped making judgment on the entire season based on a test runs.

Be careful Fiorano! It was not a "lap record" It was 3/10ths quicker than the fastest time set by the F2003 on its first track day last year on the 11th Feb. The Corriere headline is misleading - If you read the whole article you see that there is nothing to get too excited about - yet.

While this is good news, we should not get too excited. Given the progress made in chassis design, aerodynamics, and especially tyres it leaves me quite concerned......remember the new Williams was some 2 seconds a lap quicker than the F2003 recently.............

No need for apologies. What JPM did was a lot more interesting than the Ferrari time. If the Ferrari isn't good at the track it was built at, then you shouldn't even uncover it. The Williams broke the record at a track, which isn't its home track and on which other fast cars have run. Not like Fiorano, which is a Ferrari/Sauber only shop.

The Williams was 2 seconds a lap quicker, in the early part of the tests, but Bridgestone has appeared to have made big progress recently. Here are the times:

    2 M. Schumacher Ferrari (F2003-GA) 1.09.412 93
    3 M. Gené Williams (FW26) 1.10.437 88

    11 December, Jerez - Spain
    Place Driver Team Time laps
    1 P. de la Rosa McLaren MP4-19 1.16.210 54
    2 F. Alonso Renault 1.16.705 118
    3 M. Gené Williams 1.17.162 88
    4 J. Montoya Williams 1.17.339 62
    5 A. Wurz McLaren MP4-17D 1.17.665 67

Actually the lap record at Fiorano is 56:338 set by Michael last March. Today's time was 56:835 - not too shabby considering Badoer was a 57:311 in the F2003GA. Pretty good start!!

I don't have F2001 numbers, but here is what I have on the F2002 vs. the F2003GA:
The F2002 had turned the record lap in July 2002 by Michael: 57.476. The F2003GA broke that on it's maiden testing day: 57.045. The F2002 debuted at 58:620.
    Pretty cool.
    Thanks.

looks like a good start but after what happened last year, i won't count on anything. i hope the team can keep one step ahead of the pack instead of playing catch-up.

Well this didn't take long!!! Michael broke the exisiting reconrd by 1/10th:
Schumacher began development work on the F2004, covering a total of 100 laps, with a best time of 56”279 - a new record at the Maranello circuit.
This is very encouraging this early on in the year. Remember Ferrari stormed out of the box, then the pace fell off after the FIA made Bridgestone use tires that had the same compounds front and rear in early May. They spent the next 6 months developing new compounds while the Scuderia learned how to balance the longer wheelbase F2003GA. The F2004 is shorter - which is better on slow handed turns which current F1 tracks mostly have.
To have this torrid of a pace between the F2003 & f2004 this early is very, very good news..............

Blick did their own estimate on where the teams stand and set Williams as #1 and Ferrari (after all) as #2. #3 is Mc Laren, mostly because they've been testing secretely more or less without direct comparison and #4 is Renault.

This is gonna be a nail biter and a heck of a season. Great!

    Andreas;

I agree that this will be a great season as well. But i honestly think it will be more lopsided than some people think.

Here are my picks for this season

    1 Ferrari
    2 Williams BMW
    3 McLaren
    4 Renault
    5 Toyota
    6 Sauber
    7 BAR
    8 Jaguar
    9 Jordan
    10 Minardi

34 more days to go and I cannot wait :)

Struggled? They won the WDC and the WCC. So they didn't win by 100 points? It doesn't mean it wasn't in the bag. Even after MS lost his wing it was still a very good shot at wrapping things up.
