    Jim,
The 348 SS is as much fun to drive as any modern Ferrari, including the media darling F355...In response to the 348 SS #90 in question, I don't personally know anything about this particular car but it seems well cared for with only one owner and has service records....If you're serious about the #90 I would suggest to contact the seller and discuss the condition of the car...Take it for test drive, if you can....

As far as "issues" with the 348 or SS in general, there aren't any ;) Having said that be prepared to pay high costs at the dealer for ANYTHING, including an oil change....The engine-out-of-the-car timing belt change can put a hole in your pocket but needs to be done...Some electrical gremlins appear once in a while but they are not major...Mostly annoying to live with...Anything you have read in the press about handling problems with the early 348 cars, is not an issue here....The 348 SS has a much improved suspension, plus updated Bosch 2.7 ECU, less restrictive exhaust system, lightweight wheels, more HP (320HP vs 300HP for the regular 348) and better rear end tail-light treatment...It is destined to become a collectible car one day with only 100 (some say 115) cars built by the factory...

I wish you all the best in your search for a F-car and also keep in mind that the 348 cars in general are now over 10 years old and have been at the bottom of the depreciation cycle (while the F355 cars have not)...They can only go up in value from here....I seriously doubt you'll come across a 348 SS in top condition for less than $50K.

My car is very similar with Byron's, sometimes I get fooled as well.

    It's gotta be with the wheels - The " Byron's 348 inspired" wheels :)

Yes, very similar to Byron's car (RIP). Did you replace the door panels for 355's?

The F348 Ferrari Spyder was launched in 1993, running alongside the evolutionised F348 GTB/GTS. It was the first two-seater spyder sportscar made by Ferrari since the 365 GTB/4 (Daytona) Spyder last sold in 1974. It was the first mid-engine two seater Spyder produced by Ferrari.

There have been many engineering developments and design refinements to F348 series that have improved its Performance, Handling and Comfort.

In addition to the modifications to the body configuration of the F348 Spyder, there had been significant technical changes that enhanced the performance and road stability.

Engineering developments included a transverse gearbox with revised ratios for quicker acceleration and a free flowing exhaust system for higher power output. The wider rear track with an improved suspension system assured better handling and manoeuvrability.

In 1994, the evolutionised F348 GTB/GTS cease production with the all new F355 GTB/GTS. The F348 Ferrari Spyder’s were still produced alongside the F355 series.

The late F348 Ferrari Spyder’s were further evolutionised by introducing the F355 characteristics onto the F348 Spyder’s as a development platform for the all new F355 Spyder that was to be released in 1995, when the F348 Spyder cease production.

Here are my 348 spider performance figures..

    0-100 km/h - 4.7 sec / 0-60 mph - 4.6 sec
    Top speed is 295 Km/h / 183 mph
Max Rpm Limit - 8200 rpm
Max Power Output – 269 Kw / 365 bhp (PS) at 7,800 rpm
    Max Torque – 375Nm / 278 lbs/ft at 5,200 rpm

I noticed that you live in Austin. Do you use a Ferrari shop in Austin? I live in Lubbock and plan to buy a 348 SS from California this week. Of course, there isn't a Ferrari shop in the Hub City and the closest shop is probably Ferrari of Dallas. I don't usually like dealerships and was wondering if you know a good shop in your area? Thanks, Jim Riggs

I forget which issue, but a while back Forza put out an issue that included a "348 Buyers Guide".
It is available for back order for $8.

That issue is Forza June 2001, issue #30. It's a must have for 348 owners/buyers.

I can photo copy & fax it to someone interested.

    Regards,

Yes, I am currently trying to sell it. It is black with factory air, kinda rare, but it will be a restoration project. It has over 100k on the engine and trannie, but the body is solid and rust free. It doesn't have power to the fuel pump so I can't start it. If you are interested, send me a private message and we can talk. Jim

Can you modify a stock 348 rear to look like this? I have never been a big fan of that black grille accross the lights...

possible? is it just taking out a few screws? love the back of the 348SS!

    Great car!

I think there are 4 or 6 screws that hold the rear grill in.
Problem is, I think on the regular 348, the lights are slightly recessed...
It would look ok but you'd have to have a machine shop make a plate
or something to wrap around the edges..

Hmm... not sure what you mean about wrap around the edges....

I would buy a 348TS if I knew I could make it look like the SS in the back...

    20-30K difference in price for a 355GTS!

Sorry - well, when you pull that rear grill off, it also wraps around the outer
edges of the tail lights if I'm not mistaken. You'd def have to have something made to fill in those areas - I'd guess under $1000 but probably 5-700...
