I have two 1:18 Mira 348s that I broke down last night for painting. The paint jobs are just awful. Since I haven't painted a model since JR. High I have some questions:

How can I save the tiny stickers on the body? ("pininfarina", "348", etc..)

Is there an adhesive that I can use to glue medal to medal (one of my door hinges broke and I need to weld it in place)?

Is there an adhesive that I can use to glue plastic to medal?

    Ok, painting...

My plan to paint was this...

    1) sand with rotary tool, sand paper
    2) spray with primer (spray can)
    3) spray with paint (spray can)
    4) spray with clear (fspray can)

    Is that correct?

Will I get a nice smooth shinny paint?

what brands of paint to you all recommend?

    Thanks fellas!!!

    Luke.

for metal to metal...either super glue or a 5 minute epoxy glue.....the same method can be used for plastic to metal....

"Chrome" parts like the horse etc are removable. You might have to break the sockets, but can always glue them on later.

Stickers are lost. You could take pics of them and recreate them via the PC. There is a decal cover adhesive that you could put on before painting, but it gets messy with small parts.

Superglue works on all surfaces, but creates white spots on plastic, so you need to repaint after glueing.

I never sand down an existing model. There is the risk to roughen up the surface too much. I rather give it a few coats of rattle can paint.

I'm using real Ferrari Rosso Corsa paint, but any rattle can paint normally works just fine.

interesting. before I dive into a larger project, I'm just starting with an extra Maisto S2000 that I have laying around. (oddly enough I have three silvers - why, no idea - gifts)

Good approach. Each model I build I learn something. Some times I screw up, sometimes not. But the overall experience and results are getting better.

There's a product called JB Weld that you can get at any autoparts store. It's a metal epoxy. Might be overkill for the project, but the stuff rocks. You can file it/sand it just like metal if you need too, and it is strong. Regular epoxy might weaken on a door hinge. This stuff will not.

But there are rough spots already? The seams especially.

So what would you do, step by step?

As far as getting the old paint off, my brothers used to use a Pine Sol/water mixture to get the paint off of pewter figures. It did a good job and would get into the crevices of the intricate pieces. I am unsure of mixture though. Another option you might try is model paint thinner?

    1) Take pictures of decals that need to be replaced.
    2) Take off all chromed parts
    3) Disassemble the model as far as possible.
    4) Sand any rough spots smoothly
    5) Tape off any section you don't want to paint.
    6) Spray paint lightly.
    7) Let dry for 24 hours
    8) Back to step 6 about 3 times
    9) Glued/screw everything back together
    10) Using a fine brush and paint from the rattle can, fix any problem spots

Decals - http://www.pattosplace.com/decalsf-o.html He has a bunch of Ferrari decals and he does them in 1/18 (even though they aren't listed). It cost me $12 delivered for a sheet and took 2 weeks to make it to Ohio , from Australia.

As for painting, I usually use 2 coats of primer, 2-3 of color & 2-3 of clear coat. I let the paint harden for about 2-3 days -
then sand with 1500 grit(just a little, for a nice ,smooth finish)
then buff with a clear coat compound(fine to medium cut, to get rid of the sanding scratches)
then buff with a finishing wax (silicone free)

To strip the paint, you can use oven cleaner or Castrol Super clean, either will strip the model bare. I recomment Automotive sanding primer, and 3M scratch filler for any small flaws you may find. At this point, you sand and fill until the body is smooth. Then do your paint and clearcoat, followed with some 3M fine cut polishing compound and carnuba wax.

You don't say where the hinge broke, but I would, if at all possible, drill a hole through the hinge where the break is and push a peice of steel rod through it for improved strength, then cover it with some JB weld.
