    The only official GTE I know of was the 250GT 2+2

    The new chassis had a codename:Tipo 508 E

    To me it makes sense that that E was used.

    My sources tell me that the acronym stands for
    "Gran Turismo Elongato" (lenghtened, which it was, with the motor moved forward a bit).

    That makes sense. Though the "E" isn't explained in the quote provided from this link, the fact remains, the engine was moved forward 200mm.
    "However, one fundamental alteration unique to this model was the slight re-location of it's engine, now 200mm further forward in the frame in order to free up additional cockpit space. This importantly allowed the rear seats to be fitted ahead of the rear axle whilst the track was widened front and rear, again with the intention of maximising cabin space."
