As most of you know I tend to be more interested in F car that have a race bent on them. I have always been a fan of the obvious ones, F40 LM, 333SP, and the 512 sports cars.

I have been a regular subscriber to "AutoItalia" for quite some time now and it's a first class magazine that covers new and old road cars from Italy and at lest one or two significant race cars each issue.

This past issue they test drove one of the orginal 6 288 GTO Evo's and the article/review is first class with a good collection of great photos.

I never thought much of this car as anything more than a 308/288 GTO with some hobbled together body panels to make it a test mule for the F40 and Group B effort but since reading the article it's now piqued my interest and looks like a great car.

Still not sure about the "snout" nose but this car is awesome if for no other reason than it's performance. Lighter than an F40 and 650 HP!!!!!!

Anyone have some more pictures of this car or link to more information. I searched the net but there isn't much info.

You can see the article online at http://www.auto-italia.co.uk/latest/ferrari288.htm

If you can get AutiItalia at the newstand pick up a copy. I have no relation to them but it's a great magazine.

Interesting article on a car I first saw in a very early spyshot that talked about the dev program for what would later become the F40. Thx for the link. Never knew it had that kind of output in race trim.

Does the nose remind you of something like this?

The 288 did compete in the Group B division for which it was homologated, of the World Rally championship in 1985 I believe. One rally only AFAIK.

Thanks for the additional info !!

Martin, not only does the nose on your car look similar but the GTO Evo also has two spoilers on the back. The lower one is very small and can hardly be seen in the pictures.

Bryan, I remember that issue but can't remember what year. I have all the old R&T's from about 83 on, can you tell me what year and month??

I believe the GTO Evo was being built not for the Group B rally races but for the Groub B sportscar series, where Porsche raced the 959 B spec car at LeMans.

Can anyone confirm this. Would love to see a GTO Evo in action if it did indeed race in the rally series.

I have contacted AutoItalia to see if they might send me some of the pictures they took. The photography is awesome.

    Regards,

    Jon

In the latest EVO issue, there's also a test with the 288 GTO Evo

By the way, it's a Ferrari special ;-)

No it never competed in any rally. Arent you confusing it with a 308 Gr 4 Michelotto ?

The article I posted is from a R&T Special Series on Ferrari from July 1987. This is not the monthly issue, but a quarterly series that R&T did.

The Evo never competed. It was built in 1986...just when Group B was shut down. Two crashes occurred in 1986 in separate races (Portugal and Corsica) killing at least 5 and injuring many more. FIA cancelled the series for the remainder of 1986 and 1987. Major competitors just dropped out and they never started it up again.
