    Hello all,

First off, thanks to all on this forum who always offer such good adivce. My newbie question for this week has to do with emmission testing.

I bought a 1986 328 a month ago - which sadly has been mostly gathering dust in my garage ever since because WI decided to pick this winter to finally get some snow. I have actually had it out 3-4 times, but I've never cruised in my own Ferrari with the top off!! How sad! Anyway, the last major was in 2002 and the car has 21k on the clock.

Yesterday I received my request (well, demand) from the WI DOT to have my car to an emmissions testing site by 3/21/04. I'm hoping most of the 3" of salt that are currently on our roads are gone by then, so at least I can drive it as much as possible to the get cobwebs out before getting the test done.

However, anything else I can do? - Things others have found, etc. that I should check and double check before testing. The last thing I want to do is hand over my Ferrari so some shop can "Look for" the cause of an emmissions issue at $100+/hr. Especially if it's a leaking gas cap or something.

PS - for those of you that helped when I thought I had a gray market car...I still don't have resolution yet...but I did get a call from WI DOT (only took 1 month for them to call) and I did send them all of the documentation I had. Hopefully this request for an emmissions test is proof that it's worked out!

    Many thanks! Battman

Find your local Ferrari specialist, maybe someone closer can help with that.

Have them calibrate with a four gas analyzer, and know where you are before you hook up to the state's computer. HTH

BTW, a properly tuned car is a good running car!

    Battman,
If the car is stock, it should pass easily. Next time you drive it, take the gas cap off when warm and see if pressure is released.

As for gray market. It's all in the VIN. Call your nearest Fcar store and give them the number. If it was sold in the US new, they can tell you what dealer sold it and the inservice date.

Battman, I had mine tested last summer, and funny enough its numbers fell way below those posted by our Civic! Going in, I had no idea how it would fare since it has that sharp exhaust smell and so forth. But it did fine. Don't sweat it--you can always go back and retest.

Also, let me know when you're ready for a cruise up to Road America. Some nice winding back roads...
