    On Fox.
It should be a great race with a great finish. I would bet that the top 10 finish within 5 seconds of each other. Daytona 500's always have great finishes. I strongly urge those that are anti-NASCAR, but have never watched a race before, just watch the last 10 laps of the race. I promise it'll be exciting. There are more passes in one nascar ravce than there are in an entire F1 season!

Amazing racing! I think I'm becoming a NASCAR fan.
Just decided to watch the race since I have nothing else to do today. Six inches of solid ice on my 800' driveway and 20 degrees today.
But, I am sitting here drinking a gin & tonic, smoking a good cigar and watching Fchat on my laptop.

Maybe I should run out and buy a six pack of budweiser and sit here in my underwear to watch the race. Am I becoming a redneck?

Seriously though, it is really good racing.

I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but this time of year my racing jones will force me to watch anything. One thing I wish another series would copy is the SpeedWeek concept. If you're crazy about stock car racing, what would be better than an entire week of racing?!

Years ago I thought the ULTIMATE RACING WEEKEND would be: THE ROAD AMERICA ULTIMATE WEEKEND. Saturday: Nascar 200 mile roadrace & 3 hour prototype(LeMans) race. Saturday Night: Concert by The Rolling Stones & Aerosmith. Sunday: Cart 200 Mile & F1. Tickets would be $500.oo for the entire weekend. I bet it would be the greatest weekend event ever.

    AH!!!! DREAMS.

You'd need to offer more. Michael Waltrip made 1.4 million last year winning the Daytona 500, and the second place guy made 1.2. There's some serious money in NASCAR.

Mikey was the guy who took the ride today and ended up upside down after a multi-loop barrel roll. He was not a happy camper with the safety crew after it took far too long to get him out of a flattened car.

Not a bad race, but the DEI car was so dominant in the late going that there really wasn't much of a contest there. On to North Carolina :)

What you need to do is view F1 season as one long race. And view certain eras of racing as "seasons". If so, it becomes much more interesting because it's deeper and more involving. The passing doesn't always take place on the track: it often takes place in technological development, aerodynamics, car set up, driver swaps or improvement, etc. We are allowed to follow the sport on many levels that something like nascar is just not designed to provide.

Nonsense. If you truly believe that innovation, team interaction, aero changes, driver swaps, and the rest don't play a part in NASCAR, you're not paying attention to the sport.

It was a great race and it was also great to see two Daytona 24 Hour teamates (Dale Jr. and Stewart) drafting the last 40 laps together (and most of the first 70 laps).

I like all forms of racing. F1 is still tops with Sports Cars second but I'll watch NASCAR when nothing else is on. They have done a good job in recent years attracting the young hotshoes from open wheel racing (both dirt track and pavement). I root for guys like Johnson, Harvick, Newman and Busch.

    Some things I noticed today:

    1) Restrictor plate racing is still too dangerous in my opinion. All those cars running together is an accident waiting to happen. They say restrictor plate racing slows the cars down and makes things safer, but that is total b*llsh*t. Nascar wants big crashes because it's fan enterainment. They must have replayed the big crash at least 20+ times from every angle including inside the car when Waltrip's hand was getting covered in dirt. I am surprised the drivers don't complain more about this.

    2) Broadcast team was pretty good but Benny Parson's needs to go. He is way too much "southern-hick" NASCAR image that they are trying to drop. His stupid statement about just turning Waltrip's car over struck me immediately as someone who hasn't raced in 25 years from a saftey standpoint. When a driver has a 20+ G impact you don't just flip the car over when he could have severe internal injuries.

    3) I wish they would stop referring to Dale Jr.'s father all the time. It's common knowledge that he wasn't very close to his father. He didn't even live with Sr. for much of his life. He and his sister were raised by Sr.'s first wife and Dale never saw his dad much. I am sure he misses his father, but he rarely shows any emotion when asked about Sr. and most of the time quickly changes the subject. He seems uncomfortable with the referrences and he should be judged on his own successes not those of his father.

    4) What the hell happened to Lee Ann Rimes. She about a foot taller than the last time I saw her (granted it was 3 years ago) and she sounds like a man!!!

    5) Scott Wimmer, a racer, even the most die hard NASCAR fans had never heard of finished 3rd.

    6) The new tires and new aero package makes the cars look much more unstable. Bieffle's car looked like it was running on ice.

All in all a great race. I watch about half the races in NASCAR and despite all the anti-NASCAR bashing on this site some you might be surprised at the racing.

It can't compare to F1 because it's like comparing apples to oranges. If you look at it as a different form of racing then you won't be disappointed.

Does anyone else besides myself have a problem with the media, perhaps at NASCAR's direction, keep referring to past Winston Cup champions as "Nextel Cup" champions? ie. Nextel Cup champion Bill Elliot escorting Pres Bush...
To me, that's revisionist thinking besides not being truthful. Is that anyway to treat Winston for all they did for the sport?

I should note that the last nonrestrictor plate race at Daytona was accident free!

Resctictor plates were adopted after a string a big wrecks as a way of slowing the cars down. Then somebody noticed that everybody had the same power and went the same speeds, and there were bigger wrecks.

If they really wanted the lower speeds and wanted to avoid restrictor plates (so engine development mattered again), they could go to shorter strokes (305 or 289 ro 263) to minimize power. In these engines this only requires 10 parts different than the 355 engines: 1 crank, 8 con rods, and 1 cam. They won't be able to use any more RPMs because of the pushrod valve actuation technology.

NASCAR wants big SAFE crashes, fans love crashes (its NASCAR mentailty) but fans hate deaths, so NASCAR is trying to thread the proverbial needle--poorly in my opinion.

Mitch I agree 100% with your theory. NASCAR doesn't see it that way and as a result Dale Sr. is gone.

As recent as 1995 Bobby Hamilton was still wearing jogging sneakers to drive in because he said it gave more feedback and Dale was wearing an open face helmet.

Remember all the backlash about the HANS device. Stewart even mocked NASCAR by wearing it with so much slack in the helmet strings that they were hanging down his chest.

Even Michael Waltrip sounded like a complete idiot telling the tv audience he was screaming at the track workers to flip the car over. How the hell does he know if he's ok, he could be in shock for all he knows.

I am really beginning to like certain aspects of NASCAR and it is great entertainment but some things I still don't like.

    Regards,

    Jon

It may be part of the deal. Say Nextel until the viewers name their children after us. It's been done before. Kinda sh*tty but what are you gonna do?

My point was that there is indeed "passing" in F1. The "race" is the season and if viewed that way, there is passing. But to your point: compared to F1, NASCAR is very low-tech. And aren't aero set ups dictated by the organizers?

F1 appeals to a different sort of audience than American sports do and Americans find it boring for the same reason they don't like soccer: the average American's attention span is too short and they are too goal/point oriented and do not recognize the beauty in an attempt that doesn't end up being successful.
