I want to start making some driving videos in the spirit of Claude Lalouche's Rendezvous. Before investing in and experimenting with the wrong equipment, I wanted to see if any of you have experience trying to film using mounted cameras. If so, what equipment do you recommend? (If possible, I would like to do something under-the-bumper than doesn't require drilling)

Also, has anyone experimented with microphone placement to get then best engine sound possible? I'm happy to experiment myself, but wanted to leverage anyone else's experience if possible.

Sports commentators (did I spell that right?) on TV always have the headsets with the huge foam balls at the mouthpiece. This is to reduce the noise. I would think that the same would apply for an external mounted mic on a car, a lot of foam. Testing will tell.

uni-directional shotgun microphone and a DAT recorder.

For your application I would say rig a shotgun to the engine area and have the camera on the roll bar. you will be getting almost nothing other than the engine sound with that sort of setup.

I do this type stuff professionally.
The first thing you should do before you get hot and heavy into this project is set a budget...
How much money do you have to commit to this project?

That is very cool! Two questions:

    1. Is the image quality any good (i.e., how much worse is it than filming from the lense of a good camcorder)?
    2. If you have two camcorders, can you use two of these simultaneously, or do the signals interfere?

I want to do this on the cheap, basically. I already have a good mini dv camcorder and want to spend may $1000 to get a lens down under the bumper and a mic to pick up engine sounds. Anything I can do for that amount?

"I already have a good mini dv camcorder" does not tell me much...
Does this camera have composit or s- video in?
    balanced audio inputs?
Manual gain control on the audio inputs?
    Manual focus lens?

Here's what I found on it:

    S-VIDEO IN/OUT,
    VIDEO IN/OUT (Special AV mini),
    AUDIO IN/OUT
    (Special AV mini, Stereo),
    External MIC Input
    (Stereo plug in power),
    DV IN/OUT (i. LINK),
    Phone Jack, LANC Jack,
    USB terminal, DC IN

It also has a manual focus lens. It's just a Sony DCR PC-110 from a couple years ago (was good back then).
