There's no question the 360 is a huge hit but the 550 and 575 aren't and I doubt the 612 will be either. That's what this is about. The future, and as the 612 is the latest model, a car I wouldn't take as a gift, and I mean that literally I feel they're losing their way as do others.
    That's not saying we're right.
Lambo esp. under VW/Audi is stepping out. They are pushing the envelope. The Enzo does as well but in my opinion the 360 needs the 612 engine and the design edge of the CS taken even a bit futher at a Murcie GTR (Street) MSRP.

Allanlambo:You are forgiven for not remembering the over MSRP selling prices of the 550's in the first 3 years of production ,since you were wearing diapers at the time.Ask some grown-ups ,what were the prices for 550 and 456 back then.

James - I think that the Murci, for Lamborghini, is actually getting more understated, more classy. I like it. When I compare it to a Countach, Diablo etc., it looks less like a kit car and more rounded, it flows more, no wing etc. I think their designs under Audi are better and less in your face. I think it is a very good design for a mid-engine exotic. A good balance. I like the Gallardo a lot - except for the rear. However, I still get drawn to the looks of the 360 a bit more - I cant explain it.

I am not a huge fan of the 612 on paper. But if I was in the market for a 4 seater, I would take it. Not at its price - hence I expect it to depreciate quickly. However, I dont think a 4 seater should have in your face styling. Your Maserati doesn't. I would take the 612 over a S55, a Maserati, a Bentley GT. Now before, we all scream price - I agree, it should be better styled and classier for its price. Now its engine - that's a different story. How it drives - we'll see.

Now the 550/575 - I really like it. We can agree to disagree there. I like its styling. As someone said, you could own a 575 and a Murci. They kinda serve 2 different purposes. If Ferrari's 12 were mid-engined and not a GT, then I would agree with you that it would need to push the envelope more (from a styling perspective) in keeping with the type of car that it would be. It would also be good to then compare the performance and styling of that car with a Murci. Right now I dont.

I like the Maser's (Coupe) styling better than the 612 and I also like the Bentley Coupe better but I realize that's personal. (The Maser coupe @ 70k where you can buy a new left over ain't too bad) I also think the Bentley is a much better value at 100k less than the 612. The 5000 firm orders are also impressive as is the 207 until the tank ran dry, (30 minutes) run. VW is the real deal and they're palying for keeps. If they wind up owining Ferrari this will get really weird.

Well, this thread has taken the scenic route! Okay, here's where I'm at:

New Lambos look way more exotic than new Ferraris. Some like this, some don't. Some say Ferraris should never blend in the crowd of Ford Taruses; I have to agree to that. I would like like the new "entry level" Ferraris to look a little more original and unique. Forget the wind tunnel; get an artist on LSD like Lamorghini does to design the body. Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't miss a Lamborghini.

This isn't to say Ferraris are not as good as Lamborghinis. I'd rather travel cross country in a 550 than any Lamborghini; I'd rather go to my High School reunion in a Lambo. I wouldn't track either car without modifications however as I think there are way better choices (the P word). And if I wanted to impress Mario Andretti, I'd pull up in my Europa.

Yes i was wearing diapers when the guy at Shelton was begging me to buy one 5-6 years ago for alot less than sticker. Keep dreaming!

Murcielagos were selling over sticker for a year or so. Big Deal. I wouldnt pay oversticker for that either.

Hey heres a good one! What happened to the people who paid $350-400,000 for a Barchetta just a few short years ago? LOL!

In all honesty, do you want to know why the 360 is such a success for Ferrari? Its because its the only car, in Ferraris lineup that contradicts what most people say they like about Ferraris of today. It has virtually the same performance as its higher priced 575 brother, is much more exotic looking, and does have a "Hey look at me" personna. It also costs substantially less. So for die hard Ferrari fans, its the only choice. It is the only Exotic looking Ferrari, that is recognizeable, as a Ferrari.

I wonder if the 456 redesign 612 suggests what Ferrari will do with the eventual 550/575 redesign?

When Ferrari does come out with a replacement for the 550/575, they really need to do a way better job of it than they did with this latest thing. I don't have anything against a 2+2, or a front engine car. What I have a problem with is the blandness of the designs. The design of the 456 and the 550 are nice, but can use a little bit of enhancing. I think that the 456 looks much better with a set of argessive looking after market rims on it, and lowered a little bit. Same thing for the 550. The replacement for the 550 should be more sleek looking. For example the Cadillac Sixteen concept car, is very sleek looking, yet classy at the same time. I do think is it a bit long, but over all an attractive car. It is modern looking and still has an elegance to it. This is the type of thing Ferrari needs to do. If Ferrari is trying to hit the older demographic, do it with style, not uglyness. The cars can be made to look classy and still have that exotic flavor to them with out going over board. Ferrari really needs to keep some exoticness to the cars, because they have a RACING heritage. The new cars, Enzo aside, are really watered down. I don't know about you guys, but I think it would be way cool if Ferrari let current owners vote on what design they thought was best for the next car. Take all of the conceptual disigns that they have and let the owners vote on what they thought was best. Why owners? Because A) we already own a Ferrari B) we would be the ones buying it C) it would be a neat firinge benefit.

All car companies need to start doing this. The internet has changed things. Honda's next NSX and Lambo's Baby should have been put on the web in a few designs so people could vote. You wouldn't have so many people walking away from the Great Gallardo saying the styling of the back-end just didn't do it.

Porsche could have used a tiny bit of help on its new GT super car. They almost got it perfect.

Can an old dog learn a new trick? Car companies are so slow to change.

I sick of holding my breath waiting for a secret new car to be unvailed to the public....only to be disapointed. There has to be a smarter way.
(they spend millions and then get a hit or miss.)

God help us if Ferrari comes out with a 550/575 replacement more dull in-line with the 612's non exotic styling.

I bet if Ford put a few designs of the GT 40 for us to pick from.... the public would have picked the exact copy like Ford did.

maybe we wouldn't see so many ENZO's for sale if it just had a tad less "moon buggy look" going on.

Nope. Those are people trying to make a quick buck, just like with the F40. I'm sure you don't think the F40 is boring and not exotic?

F40 always had a kit car look in photos, but when you see the F40 for the first time, it's just perfect! I wonder why the car never looked as good in pics?

I was just half-joking about the Enzo sales

You know, this thread has gotten a little bit silly. Please allow me to demonstrate:

DrTax, what do you think of the new 612?

Well, I kinda like it. I learned a long time ago that you have to see a car in person before making a judgement. But, because I own a Maranello, I'm obviously partial to long-nosed front engined cars that look like a Camaro. (Yo quero a Camaro!)

Fair enuf, judging just from pictures, how do you think the 612 compares to say the Bentley GT?

This is not a fair question because I saw the Bentley in the flesh during the Detroit car show. And, indeed, the Bentley looks a lot better in person than in pictures. Having said that, however, I hate this bullnose crap that is becoming so popular. Yuk! So the 612 wins this contest.

Okay, are you willing to place an order for a 612 at $250,000?

    NFW!

Hmmm, well would you be willing to pay $150K for the Bentley?

    Double NFW!

    Why not?

I never buy a new car. I always prefer to let someone else take the 25% depreciation hit for owning a new expensive car. (Well, to be honest, I just brought my daughter a new Toyota Highlander. But that doesn't count, because it is a SUV and a Toyota. I'm assuming that we are talking about real cars here.)

So why would Ferrari give a rat's behind what you think about the new 612?

Beats me. You're the one asking the questions.

In other words, Ferrari will sell every 612 it makes. While I doubt that many FerrariChat types will buy one, somehow, someway, I think that Ferrari understands it's customer base, perhaps better than we do.

    Say good nite Gracie...

You might want to compare the price for a new 360 at a dealer to the used prices...

Maybe this explains why I own a 550 instead of a 360. Actually, my business partner just brought a brand new 360 from FOH. Somebody fell out of place and my partner stepped up in July and had his car with the options he wanted in October, at sticker. (With a tip of the hat to Joe Maniaci @ FOH.)

Just remember as Jimi sang "Castles made of sand slip slowly into the sea."
