Breaking a car in?

The owners manual says you shouldn't go above 5000 rpm for the first 600 miles.

 

Reputable tuners are recommending that on new cars with synthetic oil, you replace the synthetic with standard motor oil for the first 1,000 miles or maybe more. You will get better seating of rings to cylinders, thus higher hp..

 

i have a friend who has a friend who works for ferrari in a technical capacity. we asked him how ebst to break in the stradale. here's what he said:

Ring sealing procedure, there is nothing you can do, that will only come
with a build up of carbon and in a modern engine just forget it.

Anyway what you should do for about 500 miles.

Engine, always warm up before setting off if it has been stood
overnight. In a modern engine you don't need to wait until full
operating temperature just so the needle has moved but do drive the car
gently until operating temperature is achieved. That means no high revs
but also no high load. Use middle revs let it breathe too low revs can
cause more damage than too high revs.

Once hot drive the car between 2k and 7k use the engine but do not red
line and do not use the full torque at low revs no 5th 6th gear at 2000
revs etc. Don't get lazy on up hill stuff change down keep the revs in
the middle. Speed is not a problem as much as loading the engine is. The
best thing is a long constant high speed run. High revs only give the
engine inertia forces, there is very little strain and it settles in at
a constant load and temperature.

If you want to change the oil then ok, good but not essential. Every
Ferrari engine is Dyno'ed and the last cycle is done at full throttle,
basically they are run in anyway and with modern methods of machining
its not necessary, just let it settle in as I describe.

Gearboxes, these on a race car are what are needed to be run in as they
are tight and eat a lot of Power. You should again do 500 miles and
change gear as many times as possible, 1000's of times.

On a road car it does not really apply but again at 500 miles you could
change the oil. This is never mentioned but in my opinion it is more
crucial. When you drain oil in modern vehicles you rarely see metallic
particles in engine oil but in gearboxes it is quite common. Gearboxes
are not cooled as well as engines so the oil has to work much harder.

Don't forget an oil's job is to cool first and lubricate second, not
many people know that.

Always use good oil, Ferrari recommend Shell, on a 360 engine with
arduous use we recommend the Challenge oil, I would always use it, its
good stuff (Shell helix 10W60 racing oil).
