I am a lawn fanatic -- Corn Gluten Meal, Beneficial Nematodes, Plantation Fescue, etc... There are probably 12-step programs for people like me, but I don't care. I know I've got problems with my lawn-care addiction, but heck, it's better than some other addictions, right?

Just when I've got my personal biosphere running perfectly and the lawn looks like Augusta National (without the chemicals... I'm all organic), I get this miserable pest. What is it? How can I control/eliminate it? He/she/they seems to be attracted to the warm areas on the side of the house. There seem to be about 10 of these things per square yard... sometimes more.

    Thanks in advance!

    -Daniel

Looks to me like a Boxelder Bug. Not sure as it's hard to be sure what I'm seeing in the photo. Check for yourself by following the key at http://everest.ento.vt.edu/Facilities/OnCampus/IDLab/id/id_main2.html.

YES! I think you're right. This seems to exhibit all the signs of a boxelder (swarm near outdoor living areas, etc). Now I can go about the "control" phase. THANKS!

    Daniel,

Those little *****es are definitely boxelder bugs, not stinkbugs. We got a swarm of them 2 years ago. They love trying to get warm in the fall by slipping in your windows and doors. If you smash em they turn into red paste that stains. 50/50 solution of soap and water in a spray bottle kills them.
