Last night as I was driving home, my speedometer needle started going crazy. I was cruising along about 80, and the needle started dropping and raising, bouncing back and forth from about 60 to about 80. Then it got worse, bouncing from 20 to 80. Finally, it quit altogether. I'm now a permanent 10mph as it rests on the peg. I understand that the connection to the speedo is pretty basic, where should I look to be sure it's hooked up? If all is hooked up, how much is a replacement going to run me?

Are the tach repairs in that thread going to similar to a speedo repair?

I would think so, you may want to call that place they advertise in that thread and ask them. I would think that they would also do speedo repairs too.....

Could very be the speedometer sending unit ("speedo generator"), as well.

Last year my speedo went crackers but I found the sender unit had worked slightly loose. After screwing it back in, it's been OK ever since. I was lucky, it's apparently more normal to have to replace them.

Where do I look for the sending unit to see if it's loose?

This is my 308 one. The right hand side wheelarch is out. It is the grey thing with the yellow stripe and the dirty white covered wire coming out the top. It screws veretically downwards into the transmission.

It's easy to find with the wheelarch removed but it's apparently also possible to reach down the RHS of the engine to get to it.

    good luck

I'm always surprised when you people with the F models covered by FerrariUK spare parts site don't take advantage of looking at the SPCs available there.

Jim -- Same general place that Richard's photo shows -- RH side sort of underneath the rear cylinder head (but your 328 uses a different sensor) -- Item 76

Mine did the exact same thing on the drive home after delivery. A smack on top of the dash (while driving) and it sprung back to life.

Betcha you need a new sending unit. I think they run $150-ish. You might check the connections to be sure. For a sending unit, call Dennis McCann (allferrariparts.com I believe).

there was a discussion recently on making sure the conductors in the tail off the sender were intact. A broken wire was found INSIDE the outer heat shrink casing, sender was actually GOOD. HTH

And off course checking the chassis loom to make sure wire between plug connection and dash was good.......

Good idea Steve, I hadn't thought of using the site for diagrams.

I also kind of like the 'smack the dashboard' idea, as it would give me some relief from this frustration!

Now I have to find the elusive oil leak that is blowing back on my muffler and creating white smoke.

It was 1200 mi after the initial smack before it stopped again (odometer still worked) another tap and it started again. I had an Alfa that did the same thing. I guess I should check the connections, I thought it was just a quirk. Like the car saying "drive me faster, spank me"
