I'd like to install a retro looking modern car radio/cd player. Somehow I'm getting the feeling that doesn't really exist. Or does it?

PS: It's funny, you can buy a CD player/radio combination for your living room that looks like from the fifties (CD player normally hidden under a flip up face), but apparently there is no such thing for your car, where it would actually make sense.

Boy, I wish I could remember the name of the company that makes these. Try a google search. I recently saw one of their ads and they make exactly what you're looking for.

I have one in my Porsche 356, looks like the 50's/60's era radio but with a cassette player and made to fit the original holes in the Porsche Dash.

I have a 1972 era Blaupunkt cassette which had to be one of the first made. It's a POS but all yours for a price.

I know there is a BIG company that makes these.

They had a spot on the speed channel a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry, but can't remember the name.

Well I got that too. That's not what I'm looking for. I'd like something that looks old, but has modern technology inside, maybe even a CD/MP3 player.

PS: Just this weekend I saw a vintage Ferrari from the sixties and they put a brand spanking new radio in it. That just doesn't look right.

I was talking with the guy at Best Buy car area asking if they had these - something that *looks* like a Becker or old Blauplunkt but has all new tech inside (maybe even XM and MP3 capability). He said he'd never heard of such a thing and I asked him well why doesn't he design one himself and sell it (he was telling me he was a business student).

Sounds like there is some niche to be filled (imagine all of the resto-rods and muscle car market)!

It doesn't give the name of the manufacturer on the exterior. I will see what I can find, it's no big deal to pull the radio.

I too saw something on SpeedTV, maybe Dream Car garage, or Hemmings. Hey, have you tried Hemmings?

A quick google search for "classic car radios" unearthed this on page 1. This is the general type that I have. Note the one with the CD controller.

    Here's who made my 356 radio, AM/FM Casette. http://www.hemmings.com/images/pdfs/RGClassicTunes.pdf

Look through the classic (?) forum. The one for 308s. There was some talk about that in the last month. just do a search on radio.

That's exactly what I've been thinking. Not that I want to fill that void, but somebody should. Imagine all the hot rodders. The demand would be nearly endless.

Anyway thanks for all the responses. I'll check into all the leads. All my google searches so far have only got me to places where they restore really old radios. Not quite what I want obviously.

PS: And before somebody starts the debate over radio vs the music from the engine. I'm not planning on putting this into my Ferrari.

    Look in Hemmings.

Get an old Becker Europa or Blaupunkt from a Mercedes salvage yard (for the 60's look) and send it to one of the Hemmings adverts (under "services") and have them gut it and replace with modern circuits. Or they have 50's-looking radios outright. Very common operation.

What's it for? You said it wasn't for your F car (a 308 according to your profile - you had a Vega?), there's some strange radio types out there, esp for British cars

I put a modern MP3 player into the 308 as that works stylewise, me thinks.

Yup, I had a Vega, stick shift even and loved it.

This is for a Corvette from the seventies.
