i'd do the same trip in my stradale without any particular concern. but i did find out the hard way that if you have a serious tire problem with the stradale (i hit a rock the other day and seriously damaged the left front tire sidewall) that it can take several days to locate a new tire. so my only concern about a fairly long trip is that if i manage to damage a tire again that it's very unlikely that i'd be able to get it replaced quickly...even if you have tire problems in los angeles right in front of a ferrari dealer you still can't get one of those pirelli p zero corsas replaced quickly :) side note. Beverly hills ferrari told me the new pirelli p zero corsa for the front costs $295 plus $50 to ship one in from arizona plus $20 mount/balance. i'm amazed that they had to look as far as arizona for a p-zero corsa?

i called Matt M. at meridian on monday. he was only interested in selling a set of four tires. thomas_b posted that these tires are now readily available from the tirerack.com so maybe it's a non-problem :) but i think thomas_b bought a set of four tires. i'll contact tirerack tomorrow to see if they will sell single tires or only sets of four.

carrying a spare tire with you almost certainly guarantees that you'll never need it :)

i've never seen a "space saver wheel kit" option on a stradale. if you think about it please post a picture of what it looks like when you get your car.

one has no option but the tow truck in a GT2 either... those mini-spares cant really help you finish your trip, just get you to the truck....

i can understand matt only wanting to sell sets as they are hard to come by... let us know what the rack says on singles.

what mileage are you guys getting for CS tyres??? hoping for 5K with a few track days per set.....

well you can order a single tire online now - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes.jsp?make=Pirelli&model=PZero+Corsa

however I would only exchange the fronts or rears together or all four - not a good idea to exchange only a single tire if they are used

the P Zero Corsa 19' are readily available - Bob Woodman Tires has them too although $500 more expensive - search on the Internet there are 3-4 places you can get them

Well, after TWO track days (about 300 track miles + 200 street miles) I'm replacing my 2 front tires. The PZero Corsas are terrible. They are chunked, twisted and melted away. Thomas_b has had the same unfortunate experience. -Ray

What tire pressures were you running at the track?

I wanted to add that the PZ Corsas have a treadwear of 60, but they are not particulary sticky. I often felt like I was running on overheated greasy tires, such as the end of a hot day of lapping when the track is slick. As a contrast, my 996 Turbo with old Pirelli Asymetricos felt as sticky (if not more) on the track.

I love the car, don't get me wrong, but it deserves better tires.

After 2 track days and 2,000 miles my tyres are shot. New ones coming soon. However, I find that they offer excellent, predicatable grip and on a tight track the CS shaves almost 2 seconds off my Maranello times.... Obviously there are more factors at work that just tyres but decent tyres help :) - Brian

That pictured tyre has been sliding badly.

I don't know what CS pressures are without searching...but whatever the plate on the car says will be a cold pressure...so add 10% for hot and another 5% for track use....

so if they're supposed to be 32psi cold, 37 track hot would be about right as a base start point.

The inside edge of the pictured tyre is fine, so either your pressures were too low, or you have inadequate negative camber, or too much toe in.......or of course a combination of all of the above!!

Remember, even the CS is set up for predominate road use....you'll always need a compromise set up for a road car, but some simple steps can be taken to avoid this waste.

Not with these... I recommend 34psi cold on the street to protect your rims from pot holes... I recommend 33-34psi HOT on the track to avoid serious chunking and to maximize grip.

whatever...but that pictured tyre has been running on it's outer edge, so something needs to be done to spread the load across it's width...there no point having a 225 wide (or whatever it is) tyre, if you're only going to use 110 mm of it.

Pressure should only be used to maintain tyre carcass integrity, not grip.

Grip comes from maximising tyre usage. Using tyre pressure to trim car balance is a last resort. The window is usually quite small. Geometry is where the solution lies.

    brian,

you suggest 34 all 4, rather than the factory 32 front, 29 rear for the street?

you indicated earlier this thread that 5,000 miles per set was reasonable - pardon my ignorance what goes first? is it rears like a GT2?

and why would the factory have lower rec'd rear pressures than the front???

Yes the tire is sliding and it is a combination of Pacific Raceways, which is hard on the right front and driving style. Both Ray and I are accelerating hard in-between turn 3a - 3b before we brake in order to rotate the car (I posted a DL1 picture of the track in the Northwest section) and Ray has posted a video somewhere. I had the same wear pattern last time when I adopted Ray’s style, before I was using 3rd gear and less acceleration and the tire did not show the pattern. However the car does not rotate that nicely …..

When Ray states 32psi hot it is not “hot”; it is after a cool down lap measured in the pits; so I assume we are talking 34psi hot, i.e. on track. I actually did get the best wear pattern above 32psi (in the pits) so I tend to agree with around 37psi hot as optimum, however I have not been back to verify it.

I also had F look into the problem and feedback is that I should consider to change the alignment if the car is tracked that heavily. They asked for more tire temperature measurements and I will do that next time.

Finally Ray and I are lapping close to 1:40min on Pacific Raceways, which is in the range of purposeful build race cars (with race tires) – the CS is an amazing car and I feel to me the tires are the limit (besides driving style) – they are simply asked to do too much

Agreed. I'm going to have a new alignment done. I know from experience that it can make a huge diff, and this car-tire combination needs special care. -Ray
