I cannot find my original post, so here it is again.

The crankcase seal (where the gearbox shaft goes through) leaks. I need to replace it. I need to know if this can be done without pulling the engine. There is a 2.5" frame support bar under the shaft that could be cut and re-welded to possibly get to the seal (Good idea - bad idea?). One member said that the engine mounts can be loosened (sp?) to 'jockey the shaft at an angle to get the seal out for replacement.

    What are my options here?

Thanks! That is a great link. Now for the bad news!

    Answer:

If you are referring to the O-ring seals (there are two) on the shaft... You must pull the engine.

I am not excited about this! Is there not a way to replace the seal from the grear-shift area, where the shaft meets that mechanism? I can't believe I have to pull the engine to remove this $50 seal! YUK!

Are you asking about the o-ring seals on the shift shaft that goes thru the crankcase?

If so, It can be done w/o pulling the engine. There was a thread on how-to a couple of years ago.

Search the "Old Ferrari Chat Tech Q&A Archives" for 'shift' and 'seal' & similar things.

re:"What would YOUR course of action be on this job?"

Here are some threads describing shift rod seal replacement & things you might encounter:

How to remove 3x8 Shifter Shaft w/o removing engine:
(See Ric Rainbolt's post in this thread, it's what I'd do.)

It looks to be a PITA job, but I think considerably less work than pulling the engine as I know of several shops that have replaced the seals for 5 or 6 hours labor.

Here's a list of the parts you'll need:

You may want to try 'Quattro' o-rings:
