My 328 has small access plugs near the door handles which cover what appears to be openings for an emergency window crank. Removing a plug reveals a 7mm square shaft housed in a boss with an internal 18x1.5 mm thread. This shaft appears to be driven by a worm gear. It seems that any attempt to turn this shaft would damage something. What did Ferrari have in mind here? Has anyone seen a crank or tool intended for window operation?

Well heck yea! There is a special tool in the tool kit (1977) that looks kinda like a Speed Wrench (two 90 degree bends in it) that has a square on the end the would turn this crank, in the event of motor failure...

I have one.....or you could jus' put the car back in the garage..

Speedy, I am familiar with the 308 crank that you refer to but that is a "male" crank that would engage a broached hole in the window lifting mechanism. The 328 has a "male" shaft that would require a crank with a
"female" fitting to turn it. The windows work well, I am just curious about this feature!

Thanks redhead. The 88 parts book does not show this crank, but now that I have seen the image I will fabricate one.

You are correct. The 87 and 88 parts book I have do not show it either. Only found in the early one.

Let me know if you want me to email the high res version of that pic.

Ferrari UK sold me one for my 308 a few months ago at a very reasonable price, you might give them a shout for an authentic "yellow box" crank.

Anyone know why my '88 Mondial doesn't have this provision ? There's no way to operate the window manually. :(

My fabricated 328 emergency window crank. I guess this is "HOME" not "OEM" version!

I believe somewhere along the way (1987?) Ferrari stopped using the emergency manual crank feature. My car 1988 328 SN 75063 does not have this.

Uh...apparently you have an pretty extensive bunch of machine tools at hand...and the necessary skills to use them! ;) Nice work.
