I'm finally in a position to buy my first ferrari, looking for a 328 (preferably GTB but GTS will do) and have been scouring the websites and classic car mags for the ideal car within my budget (£30k).

I've seen what looks to be a very good 29,000 mile example at a long established Aston Martin specialist - I was wondering whether I should get the car inspected by a Ferrari specialist before purchasing or whether I can rely upon the reputation of the Aston guys?

I would say you should get it inspected by either a Ferrari specialist or main dealer. Not only will this give you extra peace of mind, it will also give you a tool to haggle with if things that need sorting out are found. Sometimes the seller will agree to sort them out before purchase; otherwise you should be looking at a discount.

Drive as many as you can before you commit to purchasing one. They are all different.

You will find lots of other general advice if you search the archives.

Yes get a specialist to look at it, a small price to pay for making sure it's not going ot cost you lots!, Roger from KHPC or Mike from QV London both have extensive knowledge on the 328's.

btw. Talacrest had a 328GTB for sale a few weeks ago that used to belong to 'jrs' on here, looked a nice car :)

    PK328,

My first Ferrari was a 328 (GTS), You will not be disappointed, They're great cars, and a brilliant 1st Ferrari, You learn loads, they drive great, are easily maintained and introduce you to the 'best' owners ! - But be warned, you'll soon be looking for the next one, I bought mine 12 years ago, and 4 cars later I still look for the next one !

Good look with the search and hope you get what you want,

    Best Regards,

    Seb

    Paul,

Forgot to mention, I have a good friend who lives in Nottingham (area), who owns a 'concours' 328, (Also used to own an F50), He might be able to point you in the right direction, PM and I'll send you his e-mail if you like?

Get it inspected; no matter how well respected, the Aston guys may not know the peculiarities of the 328, plus you may save some £££ in the long run...

Good luck!.. I had a 328 for 4 yrs, and absolutely loved it. In many ways, I wished I'd still got it. Set aside some funds for a sports exhaust though...!

I drove the 328 yesterday (Saturday 3rd) and absolutely loved it! Next step is to get the inspection done, anyone know of someone they would recommend based in the Oxford area?

Oxford area is a bit thin on Ferrari specialists- I tend to look south for work on mine... However, in terms of localish to Oxford, try this lot

If it was me I'd give Neal Lucas a call on 01276 670 756. I used him for work on my 328 and he really knows his stuff. I'm sure he'd travel up (for a fee!)

    Good luck!

    Robert.

Yep, obviously subject to the results of the inspection and agreeing the right price, I'll go for it - its a lovely example.

For the record, I had the car inspected today and was told that it needs at least £5,000 of work on it so I'm walking away from it. Its a shame beacuse I liked it so much but I guess its back to the search again..
