And I thought I was going to have an inexpensive summer. Add these two with the 2004 Launch and Race versions, and the 2004 1/43's...cha ching.

The car in the pic doesn't look like a 2004. The enginecover isn't right. Probably a F2003 GA. But Schumacher won the Spanish GP in that car also, so...

Exactly. With the release of the new car after the begining of the season, it messes things up for the models. Used to be a launch car and a race car (in models). Now you have the 2003GA competing in 2003 and 2004, the McLaren MP-18 never raced, etc.

So, there are these two models (probably both 2003GA, but correct for the race they represent), and we still haven't seen the 2004 models.

The F2003GA had its debute at the Spanish GP in 2003, and didn't compete in 2004. Couldn't even compete in 2004, because the bodywork wasn't in compliance with the 2004 rules. Perhaps you mean the F2002, which did race in B-spec in 2003.

Nevertheless, you're right. Modelmakers have messed it up before. I own a 1:43 Rosso. According to the company it is a model of the car Jean Alesi raced at the 1991 US GP (Phoenix), and so it has to be a 642. But it isn't. It is definatly a 641/2. Looking at it from the top, the model shows rounded sidepods like the 641/2 has, where as the 642 shows more squared examples, like the 643 (which debuted at the French GP of 1991).

I've also come across a model of the 641/2 which was supposed to be Prosts car at the Imola-GP of 1990, but at that GP only Mansell had a 641/2 at his disposal. Prost still used the 641.

Yes, I remember that there were a couple of times by a few teams where the new car was not at the first race of the year. The model makers are even more behind. So these two special cars are probably 2003 body with 2004 paint. There has not even been the 2004 Launch car yet from HW. Doesn't matter, I'll still get them.
