Well, after a great drive to Montreal for the Formula One GP, I found a puddle of coolant under my car after some partying downtown Sat night. Upon investigation, the coolant pipe, which runs from the thermostat housing past the belts, was postioned right next to the gas tank mounting strap. A hole resulted from metal-to-metal contact. I was able to have the car flatbedded to my friend's home at 2am and was able to fix it the day.

The point of this report is to warn of this happening to you. Check to see if this pipe is too close to the gas tank. As a precaution, I slid a hose over the welded up hole to insure that this wouldn't happen again. W/o taking off the pipe, I'd recommend placing a split 1.5" hose over the pipe where it sits near the tank. Be sure to secure it with tie wraps so that nothing interferes with the accessory belts.

Similar problem with the 328 from 1986 to 1988.5, the same coolant pipe can contact the underside of the air filter box and wear through. The same solution is to wrap a protective hose around the aluminum pipe to prevent it from wearing through. From 1988.5 on, the made a slight change in the air box to clear the pipe better.
