Hi guys, The right rear is making "grumbling" noises unless I unload it (sharp right turn). It is not motor and I even shut everything off while rolling next to a concrete bridge abutment, but could not hear anything coming from the outside. With the top on and windows up, it is very noticable. Any ideas? Thanks! Jim
Sounds like a wheel bearing in on it way out. Best thing is to drive the car on a hoist and have sombody underneith listen with a mechanics stethiscope to determine for such which side is causinf the noise. The bearings are cheap and easy to change so don't worry about it cisting you huge money.
Lopealong, Lift the car and then check for wheel bearing play. Grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and try to rock the wheel. You would be trying to tip the top of the tire in and out. If you have play it can get expensive if the stub axle has been damaged from a bearing spinning over the splines. Also when inside the assembly check that the distance spacer has not been damaged on ends. S.
I had a bearing replaced on my 308 this spring. Cost of the part??????? $35!!!! However, 1.5 hours of labor!
Hey, thanks for all the replies! I was going to jack it up and check it out over the 4th since I will not drive my baby until I find out what is up Unfortunately, I ever got around to it! I will tackle it this week or weekend. If it does prove out to be a bad bearing, have any of you wrenched this changeout yourselves? THanks again for the help! Jim
Slewman has a good point, change it before it spins a race or chews up a spacer, (probably a whole lot more than $35). Now is usualy a lot cheaper than later. personal experience. chris.
When I bought my 308 it too had a right side noise, and it was the wheel bearings. Took the hub off and gave it to my mechanic. He pressed in and out the old and new bearings. I could have done it myself, but not knowing anything about Fcars at the time, was a little scared to do it myself. Cost= $334.00 (new bearings. seals, locknut, labor. If I had to do it all over again I would do it myself.
