in all the time i have been around the automotive industry I have never seen a press release worded this strongly.

BMW ANNOUNCES A SERVICE CAMPAIGN ON A LIMITED NUMBER OF BMW MODELS EQUIPPED
    WITH V8 OR V12 ENGINES
Woodcliff Lake, NJ, July 14, 2004... Due to a temporary production fault
at one of our suppliers, a limited number of BMW models with V8 or V12
engines may have received parts which may cause the vehicle to stop running
without warning. Affected vehicles include 5, 6 and 7 Series cars as well
as X5 SAVs equipped with V8 or V12 engines produced between May 12th and
July 6th 2004. In the interest of the safety and security of our owners,
we are calling all owners of affected vehicles and asking them to stop
driving their vehicles immediately and offering alternate transportation.

I guess you drive straight to the dealer and get a loaner.

Crazy situation. That supplier is going to have some heads rolling that's for sure...

Maybe something with the fuel delivery systems... wouldn't be brakes (cause of the specific recall). Maybe a defective piston rod?

The rest of that press release: (writerguy, why didn't you just post the whole thing?)

"The cause of the potential engine stalling is defective hardware in the engine control unit. Should a vehicle stall, the driver will lose power steering assistance and power braking assistance as well. The vehicle may still be steered and braked but it will require much more effort.

In the United States approximately 2,000 vehicles with the affected control units have been delivered to customers. Every owner with an affected vehicle will receive a phone call from BMW of North America Customer Relations with instructions. "

As the driver of an E38, which is not effected by the recall, I find the image offensive and distasteful.

Must be that Microsoft OS that runs on the engine control unit.
Probably needs a service patch or a driver update.

And here I thought the reason that people weren't driving their current 7 or 5 series is that they are so FUGLY!

God, I followed a sort of off-white 7 series the other day. It is just hideous to look at.

Let me guess, you bought that crappy M3 that I got rid of after 5 months of being in the shop more than I was driving it?

Turns out right now the BMW dealers are so busy fixing v8 & 12 cars they can't find time to do the fixes on their own inventory. And the cars are being held at the docks and not getting released to the dealers.

Engine control unit failure is what my sales guy told me. They have NO NEW V8 cars to sell. None, nada, zilch, until the problem is resolved.

    What a friggin nightmare.

Must be a down under kind of problem. At least for me, I've never enjoyed driving a car more.

I'm on BMW #4, coming in Tuesday. New M3 after a succession of 5 series cars.

All of the dealers in my area, four to choose from within 30 minutes drive, are very helpful and competitive on price and service. Some of that may be the luck of the draw, one dealer sets a very high standard for service, and the rest have to keep up to compete.
