Here's a quick one for the carb'ed 308 gang. One of my cars #22127, has 1/4" square mesh screen across the door scoops as they enter the rear quarter panel, I assume to keep out low flying birds and the occaisional bread wrapper. I have had the air cleaner scoop out at times and noted the mesh was fastened with pop rivets. I note my (slightly) newer car #22641 does not have this mesh at all, only a raw opening leading into the air cleaner and/or oil cooler ducts. How does your early 308 look? TIA.
Speedy, i THINK you are referring to a wire mesh that covers the side air intakes. If you are, those were generally only fitted to the cars going to Germany as i recall. PS: If you do not want them, i'd gladly buy them.
23785, i dont have them . neat idea though, saw another aircraft hit a bird while taking off.......... yuck!!!
Thanks Stephen! And reaper! It does look "factory" as they are held in place with pop rivets with washers backing them up, very professional. But my car is US version as delivered to Canada, when new.. They catch the sunflower seeds I spit out the drivers window... It is just standard 1/4" hardware cloth, painted black.. as usual, simple materials, elegantly crafted. I'm just trying to reconcile and "standardize" the two cars, sorting out what belongs and doesn't.... thanks again....any others......?
They are fastened to the air duct that leads to the air cleaner housing or the oil cooler. They come out with that part, when removed..
Well, I had mine apart some time ago for the "Front Expoded Header replacement" project. I'll see if I can get a pic at the shop that's doing an engine out service Take a coffee can, stomp it down into a circle of hardware cloth, and there's your "insert"! LOL! It then "cups over" the back side of the quarter panel opening.... I'll try to do better for ya, than that! How'd you know that "Germany Only" response???
i saw the part of the Ferrari UK Spare Parts catalog. Tried ordering it and they replied it was fitted to German cars and would contact their Germany dealer network to see if anyone had any in stock. Alas, no one had them
So yours and reapers are like one of mine, with open scoops? I'll make a bunch once I have a pattern... BEWARE THE BIRDS, 'TILL THEN! PHHWAAP! *feathers falling* Uh, sorry!
My 308 QV is from Germany/Switzerland and has the intake scoop covers- but they are not attached to the fiberglass tube. They are riveted to the body of the car, and the mesh is smaller that 1/4" square. I will try to dug up a photo.
LOL! Ferrari UK! That goes for the WHOLE CAR! We still like 'em though! Thanks to all! Post some pics, if ya got 'em!
The intake screens were required for the German exported cars. I do not know why, probably some unique law about exposed opening on cars. My Euro 308 started life in Germany and has them.
Steven, my '85' Euro GTS QV, also has the screens. My screens look exactly like 1/4 inch hardware cloth which you can get at any hardware store.
That's the ones!!! Thanks Sean. Now get to work Stephen, and don't spend more than $5. LOL I guess you could hunt down some stainless, but they are really just the normal hardware cloth, painted black. Strange that so many US cars have them though. I never thought a thing about them 'till #22641 didn't have 'em. It's so original on everything else I thought I'd ask.... Thanks guys!
Speedy308, My car has these screens. My Euro 308 was originally built for and shipped through a German dealership. It was there for several weeks before being shipped to its' new owner here in the states.
The screens were REQUIRED by law in Germany and perhaps a couple of other countries. If a purely USA or NA car has them, they were added at the point of or after the sale. IIRC, they were never required in the Americas. IF you can find them (OEM), they run about $150-$300 EACH. Or make them yourself like I did for $5.00 for both. I also did NOT rivet them in, but cut and bent them to fit snug between the metal body and plastic scoop. Can be changed back to OEM (screens removed) with no holes in anything in about 30 minutes. They would look even better than OEM but I used different screen material, as OEM was not available in the hardware stores I frequent here. Mine are gold screen on a Dark Brown Metalic car. Looks pretty cool.
