You Only Go Through Here Once...

You are on the right track. My new business concept is just that. We not only provide a proper storage environment but also regularly exercise the cars. Every two weeks or so the cars get a thorough once over. Pressures and fluids are chbecked. The cars are started, warmed up, and driven about a mile then put back into the warehouse. Sort of like a "Keeper" for the common man.

BTW, I would be more than happy to take care of your car, if you want to ship it back and forth from Florida during the months whe it sits idle.

Horsefly: My point wasn't to dump on the car; it was to think about the kind of Ferrari you could buy with that money, given that a really good Daytona Spyder is worth, say, 350, and the extra 400 grand attached to this one could buy you even more car (which could also be driven). This one will be a mummy.

You are absolutely correct. However, you could also buy a whole bunch of "drivers" and really have a good time. Its a matter of what a person wants and how much they are willing to spend to get it.
I am very happy with an original condition ( about 150,000 miles ) 250 GT, it is ratty with rust, but I enjoy it. The next guy may need the perfect Daytona to make his life complete. Why do we constantly debate this ****?
Oh ya, because we can.

 

Ferrari should make a special edition of each model for the garage queen / collector crowd (maybe they could add "-I" to the model designation).

No engine.

1) what the heck does a " beige " Daytona look like?
2) think he would take a beat up Marrone 308 in " partial" trade !
seriously , the Daytona, Boxer and 288gto;s are my all time fave fcars. from the linked article the guy had some of the nicest fcars on the planet, all in one spot. i wonder what cars he has left..................................

great link!!! thank you for posting that ! i agree Marrone is not the best color either, i would choose a black Plexi Daytona, Euro of course. the Marrone 308 grows on you, not like i had many color choices when i was looking, maybe red or blue next time!!!! ............. ( soon).............

 

Agreed WHart. If somebody would just give me $750,000, I would go buy the $18,000 308GTS that I found and put the rest of the money in my wallet. Of course I would probably have to allocate a few dollars to buy a bigger wallet. But with that kind of money, I could hire a "secretary" to carry my money around for me. (But then the money would probably run away and never come back.)

 

I own a book with a number of pictures of this car, along with the story behind it (when it was new, anyway). Interesting guy, very nice collection.

In the book (which was published in the 70s) he talks about wanting to never drive it, just preserve it as new. At the time, I believe he had another Daytona Spyder as a driver (I could check, but then I'd have to get out of my chair and go get the book).

Not to disagree, Wayne, however in the prior paragraph to my quote above, Mr. Rasmussen says "Later, Garrison would own four Daytona Coupes in succession."

Mybe Mr. Rasmussen is exaggerating, or maybe the list you have doesn't include everyday "driver" Ferraris?

I've searched the site to learn something about Oro Chiaro, but couldn't find any information about it being a "special Pininfarina color." Can someone provide some history about this?

Wow, this certainly is a tough group. What some of you don't realize is that collectors are their own little subgroup of car enthusiasts. While you and I might be into driving, these guys are into preserving.

Moreover, $750,000 for a car that will kick ass on the lawn at PB is chump change. All the "experts" here may moan and groan about what a waste this car might be. But, trust me, the judges will be falling all over themselves to look at this car. It will be hard for anybody to say that this dohicky or that thingamabob is not correct. My guess is that the seller will get his price for this car.

Which brings me to another point, if you are into driving vintage cars, there is such a thing as buying too good of a car. I once brought a 1973.5 911T that had less than 20,000 original miles. In fact, the Porsche factory expressed an interest in buying the car. I ended up selling it because it was a shame to drive such a nice car. Plus, it never came with a/c and down here, deep in the heart of Texas, that was a fatal flaw.

So don't bash the trailer queen guys. Different stokes for different folks.

Well...for starters...the judges won't be falling all over themselves when they see this car on the lawn at Pebble Beach, 'cause it won't be there. It's a nicely original example of a relatively late model production car, and thus not eligible. .

Go back through the list of the owner's other cars. Most are earlier speciales, one-offs, or styling exercises, and many of these have indeed been shown at Pebble over the years. These are the types of Ferraris which are shown at Pebble Beach.

This year there'll be five Ferrari classes at Pebble Beach. Early road cars, early competition cars, major race winners (imagine a class of Ferraris, each of which WON the Mille Miglia, LeMans, or similar) and so on. There'll be a stunning display of the history of Ferrari in Formula One.

But no Daytona Spyders.

They'll be at Concours Italiano, or at the FCA Concours at Quail Lodge on the following Tuesday. There'll possibly be an example or two on the track during the FCA meet as well. (Somewhere I still have the photos from when a guy flipped his very original Daytona Spyder at Laguna Seca 25 or so years ago; then we had one less original example, which apparently would please some of the experts above.)

Anyway, as you say, there is room for both approaches in this hobby. A few more people need to understand that.

Okay, okay. Geeze Louise, you old guys never cut us young bucks any slack. I shoulda just said the "lawn" and left it at that. Shows how much I know about the concours side of this thing, which ain't much.

Just curious, Oldie But A Goldie Guy, do you think the seller will get his price? Is there enough interest in the preservation of Daytonas to justify this price in 2004? How high did the price of Daytona Spiders get back in the roaring late 80s?

There is always a premium for the first or last car of a series. If a show car is judged on it's orig. condition then a 70 mile used Daytona Spyder is a good place to start from. They are only new once. There are lots of people with the money and talent to re-create a "new Spyder" but ultimately that is just another restored car. Some of those have been done to a standard that far exceeds what the factory did in the early 70's. This Spyder does have some special features and a history few other Daytona models could equal. The price is more than fair for what it represents today.
