My 99 355F1 needs some freon. Am I safe to "boost" it with a kit from Walmart or should I pay my mechanic $$$ to do it for me?

    Hi
that depends what you mean that its low on freon (R134A). Does the compressor engage and you only get a cool breeze or it doesnt engage and you get a hot breeze(OAT-outside air temp.). If its not engaging its probably leaking somewhere, and in that case I would take it to someone who can check for a leak, and/or see if the system holds a vacum. Im running under the asuption that its not working and if so its time to see your mechanic. Hope this helps.

I'm not familiar with your car, but is it filled with R12 (freon) or R134a? If it's R12, it's best left to someone who has the right equipment and knows what he's doing. If it's R134a, you could give it a shot yourself, not much to lose for trying. If you haven't got a clue which you have, let a pro do it. If you try yourself, just remember, the stuff is under pressure. Wear safey glasses... you don't want to get it in your eyes.

    Regards,

Duh!! You said it's a '99. Didn't read carefully enough. You undoubtedly have 134a. But in my experience, AC is one of those things best left to those who have the right equipment to test it, make sure you're not leaking or that you don't have other problems.

    Hi,
You could do it yourself if you are so inclined. Recharging, or even doing a conversion from R-12 to R-134 is not something you should casually pay someone top dollar to do. I recently retrofitted my Mondial with a complete kit from InterDynamics, sold through JC Whitney ($30). It comes with a CD-ROM demonstrating every simple step.
Good luck, and see you on the road!
