I carried my full size USP .40 a few times, but it is way too big and bulky. I now mostly carry a Taurus PT58 .380. Even loaded with Hydroshoks, I'd still prefer a .40 over the "baby" 9mm. My next carry-only gun will be either a Hk USP Compact .40 or the "new" Hk P2000 .40.

I also agree with Frogman's theory, but sometimes you can be caught up in a situation regardless of the nieghborhood you are in. Here in New Orleans, carjackings became so commonplace that the state legislature passed a "Shoot the Carjacker" law. Basically, if you are faced with being carjacked by an armed or unarmed thug, TAG! You're it!! Double tap to CM single poke to the forehead. Because of this I am never without a gun while driving. (Especially the Ferrari)

    Dave

BTW, not to sidetrack, but...... Does anybody have any experience with the Hk P2000?

Dave, personally I am a big fan of the FN Five-seveN. Amazing weapon, albeit a tad large for concealed carry. However when push comes to shove it does not mess around. 5.7x28 round, high speed capable of penetrating almost every kind of armor and helmet worn by police enforcement today. Also has almost 0 recoil due to advanced firing mechanism. I believe the 20 round clip is still law enforcement only.

More power to you, Karen!! I am sorry for what has happened to you.

When we lived in Dallas, my wife worked outside the home, in a sales-related job. Always in her car, it seemed. After she & 6 of her friends were held up at gunpoint in front of one of her friends' VERY nice apartment compelex by 2 youths (no one hurt, thankfully), she was rather motivated to get her carry permit. She no longer feels the need for it here, and has let it expire...but, again, we both believe that it is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

    Best wishes to you,

    Dave

I still live in the same town & if judged by 12 think I will do well. I just hope I'm ready when I need to be. BTW I was a virgin before the rape.

Right on Karen! I make my wife carry pepper spray and a double edge knife. These may be weak, but they buy her a chance to run.

Hogwash! I completely agree in using avoidance, de-escalation and and other methods; but in the very rare time a gun is needed, there is no substitute. The idea that because you have a gun, every situation will turn into a "gun fight" is ridiculous. That may be true for armed, unlicensed criminals, but that is NOT how rational, law abiding citizens act. Every person I have met who "carries" has been a responsible, caring individual who most assuredly did not wish to shoot anyone. But they have come to the realization that there are bad people in this world who for no other reason, will rob, rape and kill individuals for reasons which were sufficient for them. These folks most certainly would use avoidence, de-escalation and retreat, wherever possible, but want the option of lethal force, when deemed necessary.

Anyone who carries knows that a justified use of lethal force is going to be the worst day in their life. Nothing good will come from discharging your gun in self-defence....but it is just a might better than being killed or suffering a debilitating injury....

    Karen,
I must say I feel very bad for this to have happened to you. I teach self-defense with firearms. Too often I have students in our classes who have attended after a similar tragedy has been committed against them or a close loved one. I only wish they had come before....but I commend you on your strength and perseverence and "taking control" of your future!

    Regards,
    Dave

Regardless of one's point of view on guns....everyone should carry pepper spray. It is a very low level defensive tool and very effective. BTW, don't get "mace" or "CS/CN" or "tear gas"...these are ineffective "irritants". Oleorsin capsicum (the active ingredient) is a very powerful inflammatory. The "percent strength" is an irrelevant rating...the proper rating is in scovill heat units. But most all the brands are good...Fox, Mace (brand), Cap Stun or Def Tech are known good brands.

Never bring a "pistol caliber" gun to a "rifle fight"! ;)

Colt AR15 with M4 upper receiver, Aimpoint Comp M2 on a GG&G cantilever mount. Colt four position stock, H&K 3 point tac sling, Surefire 9vt weapon light, GG&G rear MAD sight, Gemtech M4 96D suppressor...yeah, this stupid rifle has all the "wing nut" crap on it. I use it for fun and some training drills. I have a more "standard" Colt AR15 gov't model for more serious training and possible self defense use.

It is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it.

Just advice I learned from when I used to work at a gunstore.

Thecarreaper: Nice UZI's - Just wait till you cave in and get a sear for it.

davehanda: Sweet Colt. Just wait till you cave in and get a sear for it.

You guys will eventually. Just take my advice you will thank me.

As for me? what gun do I carry? I don't- not old enough. But that dosnt stop me from buying. I'm waiting for the AW Ban to sunset and for the HK M4 to come out.

One could relate this to other "safety/rescue equipment" like a fire extinguisher in the home....how often do we have fires in our home? But when you need it, there is no substitute...you need a fire extinguisher RIGHT NOW!
