    Gents,

I am a newbie to this forum, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a early Euro spec F355 (2.7 engine). I also have a Tubi ‘Pipe Only’ exhaust system (similar to a Spa Challenge system).

I have been told that the cats have blown out, and are now hollow.

My questions are: What would the effect of replacing the worn cats with test pipes be?

Would I lose too much back pressure with this i.e. pipe only Tubi and worn cats/test pipes??

Should leave the cats as they are, or replace them?

    Thanks in advance,

    Roger.

Not familiar with your particular exhaust system, so I can't comment on the backpressure, but your hollow cats are now effectively test pipes. Not much difference if you were to actually buy the test pipes now. Bet it sounds pretty sweet!

I'm not going to touch the "should I replace the worn cats with functioning cats" question.

    Cheers!

Well actually there is a huge difference between testpipes and hollow cats. You see hollow cats still have crap in them that diverts flows and the flow rate changes as it moves and there is resonance moving from a small volume to a large volume room. In my 348 which had hollow cats I put on test pipes and the difference is amazing in the sound. HP differences cannot be felt. I run basically a challenge straight pipe set-up. It is loud.

hehehe - that's my exact set-up (pipes and challenge exhaust) !!!!
People wonder why I'm laughing all the time. The 348 produces more sound than most people realize. But it hurts soooo good!

I think the 355 would sound amazing with a challenge exhaust also.. I'd def replace those cats with test pipes though - fwiw

    Dave,

I don't suppose you have any videos or sound clips of your car do you?

    the car will sound goofy
not even sound Ferrari like with straight through exhaust

    try it and see

it'll be loud and people will think you're a ricer

Remove your cats and look into them. If the honeycomb is broken or if it's gone, that means it's in your muffler, clogging up the baffles and causing backpressure, and performance loss. Ditch the clogged muffler. Install a Capristo system with their straight pipes.

Sorry.. I'll have to totally disagree. I've driven ferraris with stock exhaust and have had 4 diff exhaust setups on my 348:

    tubi with cats
    tubi with pipes
    challenge with cats
    challenge with pipes

I don't drive very often and I don't putter around either. When I fire it up and blast down the road and through some twisties,
I'm good for the rest of the week. If you haven't heard it you just wouldn't understand....

    Dave,

    i here what you're saying

i thought the original post was that he wanted to go through straight
    no cats
    no tubi
    no nuthin

    just straight from the headers

maybe i misunderstood what he was asking

hmmmm - I love a more free flowing exhaust...
You're right though... might not sound good if straight through.
    I misunderstood your comment. :)
