Elvis is a great example of this, I think the last IRL race that I attended, there was a lot of Dale Earnhardt merchandise sold there. He was portrayed like some sort of Saint on a T-shirt & a shot glass. To me it was funnier than anything that I’ve seen at a race. I never understood why people looked you to him, but that’s NASCAR fans. A breed of their very own. It’s kind of like a family tree but more like a wreath.

I’m still waiting for someone to step forward & say it was a big NASCAR/GOVERMENT cover up. There has been unconfirmed reports all around the country that they saw him working at a TGY Friday’s as a bartender is Austin, TX; A hairdresser in Salt Lake City, Utah, or a jizzmopper at Uncle Stickyfist’s House of Buggery in Clearwater, Florida.

You guys might be a little harsh on NASCAR fans. Remember this is all about passion. Who ever said that any of this, including Ferraris, made any sense?

The route should include going by White Castle, Krispy Kreme, & Dr. Nicks.

Funny I just thought of this issue last Friday, when I drove past a new black Monte Carlo on the freeway that was marked as an "Eliminator Edition."

GM marketing and everyone making a buck on the memorabilia want to keep picking that scab.

I think it simply comes down to the rarity of such skills and talents that one has. Virtually anyone can be a fireman. You don't need mad baller skills or anything like that. In sports there will always be a winner and a loser. The human mind prefers excellence and that's why some worship sports heros.

Were it not for my knees, I could've been a baseball player.

Son and Grandson of California Division of Forestry Chief. Never met Grandfather - he died on the job 4 years before I was born. Pop taught everybody proper CPR before there were EMT's. My Pop's last day? Why, all he did after driving 10 miles (though closer station was but 2 miles from scene - damn those city/county lines) was respond to a call where a 2-year-old daughter of a Nurse and a Sheriff's Deputy had sunk to the bottom of their pool. He worked on that kid there, on the way to the hospital (in the city that wouldn't respond to the call), at the hospital. Kid was pronounced dead half an hour after he was supposed to have officially retired from Fire Chief position. As you may have guessed, it wasn't the retirement day he had hoped it would be. hey, I saw him revive a few - just get on the bike and follow the smoke & maybe you'll get to watch your Pop revive an old, drunk, ugly woman one tooth in her head he pulled out of a burning house only to have her puke in your Dad's mouth.

30+ years later, though he lost less than a handful of those lifeless bodies he came upon -he may have gotten over that old bat (for one) but I still don't think he's over that last day. Still, next day he was running the Water District 12 days a week, always on call, just as he had been when he was also Chief... at the same time... though Fire gig meant dropping anything and everything - pronto. I think we had an uninterrupted Christmas once... seems something always happened on Thanksgiving and Birthdays and... gee whiz, when I was growing up, we had time to play catch once... for five whole minutes which we scheduled 2 weeks in advance before he had to go from off-duty to on-duty - pronto.

Bottom line is - those "Pros" couldn't walk the walk and talk the talk. Firemen have real stories, and as opposed to "Pros" reliving their glory days, they don't like to relive their gory days.
