Fellow masochists: reading the latest Autoweek, I began to fantasize about ordering a stripped down 575 (no radio, no carpets, no a/c, no sound deadening, etc) and using it as a track car. Of course, such a car likely would have no resale value at all, and I suspect the factory might simply refer me to the 575GTC rather than build such a beast.

So my fantasy moved on (note that there are no women in these fantasies, just cars - hmmm) to buying a 550, now that prices are down, and doing the classic street to track conversion - cage & safety, suspension, etc etc. I know from first hand experience that the conversion would be expensive and ruin the car, but it would be neat-o, and that counts for a lot.

    Anyone ever done this?

I saw Sheehan's car, and eventually there will be more like it on the market, all no doubt superior to a converted street car. Nevertheless, if one could buy an early 550 for say $80k, and spend, what, another $50k on modifications, one would have a terrific toy. I suspect you could accomplish a great deal just by reducing weight: take out or replace the a/c, radio, stock seats, stock steering wheel w/air bag, other air bag, carpets, stock exhaust, stock wheels, etc. Some of the weight loss is negated by adding a cage and harnesses.

Seems like a good project for someone with more money than sense - it certainly appeals to me.

Heres my 512TR I converted to a track car. It has a serious full roll cage, fuel cell, Motec ignition & digital instruments, Zero muffler, Race trans, F50 brakes, fire suppression system, Koenig fenders

Penske shocks & race springs coming over the winter

so far its set me back over $150 including buying the wrecked 512TR which cost $40k

As for value, I think history will settle that subject. Mine will never race at LeMans but she will race at Watkins Glen, Pocono, Lime Rock, Sebring

That should be worth something down the road

Your 512TR is a perfect example of what I have in mind. And no doubt my off the cuff $50k in modifications would just get you started.

One concern I have about the 550 is that the engine position might be a problem for a track car - too far forward? I wonder if it was relocated rearward in the racing versions.

I think the 550 probably has good balance, Any imbalance can be resolved with a rollcage & adding or subtracting weight from an area to balance the car

The Motronic system alone costs $25k

    Race trans $14k

    Suspension $10k min

    Cage & paint $15k +

$50k is gone in an eyeblink :(

Do you have a race class in mind or do you just mean you want a car that will be fun to drive at track events? If your plan is to race, things can get expensive fast. If it is just to be a fun track day car, well it's fine the way you get it. A cage and harnesses make it a LOT safer, personally I won't get near a track without them. Stripping the interior costs nothing, but will save some weight. Slicks will make it go much faster. Race shocks/springs. You could make it safe and a lot of fun for maybe $20k....the money really starts to flow if you decide to touch the engine.

I just happened to think, if it's only running at the track octane is not a problem. You could call norwood and have a low boost turbo system put on for maybe 15-30k. With race gas, I'd think 5-10 psi would work without opening the engine, that would add 30-60% more hp...that might be fun. My lowly 308 is putting out about 500 hp @ 18 psi :)

"You could make it safe and a lot of fun for maybe $20k"

Mark - Track day car - for any serious racing, I'm certain I'd be a lot better off just buying the GTC. Wonder if a modified 550 would even be legal in some SCCA class? I've once before thrown dollars at a street car (a 911) to convert it for racing use (PCA club racing), and learned from that exercise that I'd have been better off buying a Supercup or GT3R.

I agree with you on approach, if I were to take the project on, I'd start by doing (or having done) the relatively easy work: strip the interior (seats, carpet, air bags, radio, etc) and install the cage and harnesses. The first real performance work I'd do would be to upgrade the suspension.

There's no economic sense to any of this; the joy for me would lie in building and developing the car.

By the way, I agree with you on safety. Drove my Stradale at the Glen for a day, then decided I just wasn't comfortable without at least a bar and harnesses - Karosserie has the car and is doing the work now.

William H - Beautiful 512, hope to meet you at a track someday and see it in person. Do you have a site with lots of pics? Are you racing, or doing club events? I do most of my racing in an SCCA CSR car, but I'll be tracking the Stradale from time to time.

Fun though, sounds like it would be a great project! A project almost always only makes sense to the person doing it....my 308 is just a street car with occasional autocross intensions, but I think I've spent as much on bringing the engine up to speed as the whole rest of the car is worth....But I just absolutely love driving it now, words almost can't describe, so to me it was worth every cent.

I'm at Sebring quite often, shoot me a PM when you come up. I have a schedule on my site that has all of the track days occuring at the track this year (http://www.suneal.net/sched_sebring.html).

Interesting idea and a fun car to see at the track. I suggest that if you've not already done so that you find a way to drive a stock 550 on the track. The 550 is a GT, not a sports car, and it shows on the track. The weight and set up of the car have it prone to understeer and it can consume brakes like it does fuel. When I had my 550 on the track I recall thinking that it was remarkably competent and fun for a big GT, but not as much fun as Modena or GT3, or Z06 for that matter.

For sure the car can be made better with track mods, but this will be expensive and there aren't a lot of people out there with good experience in setting these cars up for the track.

For the price point you are considering, what about a used 360 Challenge? Many have not been raced and it is a proper and sorted track car that most Fcar dealers and qualified mechanics will be able to support.

    Best of luck.

rockminster - good points, all. I had and sold a 360 Challenge, great car, but I didn't want both a 360C and a Stradale. I'll use the Stradale for track days, and an SCCA eligible car I have for real racing.

The hardcore 550/575 track car project intrigues me, but I think it would take a very interested shop/mechanic, a lot of development time and of course a lot of dollars to do it right. You'd probably make mistakes along the way, and have to re-tinker. You'd have to enjoy the challenge.

Eventually, as prices come down, I think someone will do it - look at the beautiful TR pics in this thread.

A Prodrive prepped car would be a great option.
