When they were interviewing Donald Trump a few weeks ago, he was falling over backwards praising the young professional women and men on his "Apprentice" show. He mentioned how smart they are--the finalists out of 10s of thousands of applicants (funny how all the smartest women turned out to be good-looking, isn't it?)--and how they all had IQs over 200. Huh?! Strange, considering the current highest-recorded IQ among those living is 195, and Einstein was tested at 160.

Gilles: I thought average is considered 100, Einstein was a shade under / around 200?

Trump has to exaggerate something these days, since he's had to sell off a lot of his Atlantic City stuff to CSFB for 400M, reducing his stake from 54% to 20. Of course, you'll hear him say "all of my stuff has been great."

I've seen a couple different sources that attached 160 to Einstein. I can't confirm/deny that, obviously, but it seems to be consistent. Who knows--maybe that was when he was 10 years old! Haven't heard about the lady with a 230 IQ. I really need to pay better attention to things, but whatever source it was I was recently reading cited some man with an IQ of 195 as being the living person with the highest IQ on record. Perhaps there are official and unofficial measurements. Who knows. Then again, I used to be all-believing of Guinness' stats until I started seeing some of their shows.

130 + is the top 2%. An IQ of over 160 means that only about 100,000 people in the entire world are as smart as you are. As to those women over 200, in the US the probability of anyone having an IQ over 195 is about 10%, i.e., less than 1 in 10 for the US to have a single person with an IQ that high. Someone isn't telling the truth.

If you score over 140, the federal get notice, and the follow you, provide you with assistance in school, etc. If they've shown up at your residence, and spoken to your parent, then you scored that high, if not, you probably haven't. Like our height we all tend to exaggerate.

yeah, far as i can tell IQ is useless. sure, 100 is the average (of those tested), but what does 200 mean, twice as smart? it's like temperature, we (oz) use zero as the freezing point of water, and 5 degrees outside is bloody cold. so is 20 degrees out 4 times hotter? useless.

plus, just like temperature, there are many forms of measuring IQ, and many numbers meaning different things.

the other percentile measurement gives a better idea of where you stand amongst humanity. a score of 90 and you can imagine yourself in a room of 10 randomly selected people and *probably* the most intelligent, not taking into account cultural differences and whatnot.

score 98 and you're in mensa, and all that means is that you're smarter than an average out of 49 other people. sounds difficult when you think of your peers at werk and such, can you really put yourself above ALL of them? but then, take a walk down the street or a crowded mall or on a bus, these people also form part of that average.

then, there's a bunch of super-elite clubs that need like 99.99917 or something stoopid, but also only have 3 self-proclaimed members.

the point is, any online test or anything done for free, is there because they want money from you. don't go around telling people how smart you are because you got a high-score from some internet page.

Have you noticed that people who are really really really smart seem to loose common sense and are virtually impossible to deal with? Medical school faculties are full of these people.

It's ironic how patients will go to universities for "The Best", and often the residents (fortunately) actually perform the operations, or at least keep the case within the bounds of reasonable care. the residents often secretly joke about the incompetence of the Big Names.

I suspect other fields of endeavor have similar phenomema.

To say "twice as smart" wouldn't make sense.

It goes by "standard deviation." 100 is the "average" score, and every 15 points, higher or lower, is a deviation. so 85 or 115 is one standard deviation, 70 or 130 is two standard deviations, etc.

Like Art said, 130 or above is two standard deviations or above, putting you in the top 2% of the population.

yeah, what i meant basically. just meaning that the number itself is meaningless, more than a couple beyond 100 has no intrinsic value as far as i can see.

perhaps it's designed that way, what about the poor stupid dude who has to figger out through standard deviation where he stands at 73 IQ. :D could be me. :(

I took another online "IQ Test" a year or so ago. I think these free sample tests are just a hook to get you email address for spam and to make you think you are smarter than you actually are so you will sign on for their pay-for stuff.

But, just out of curiosity, I'll probably take this one too...

My uncle was tested when he went into the Army and he tested at 143. He was never given anything to strive for growing up, which led him to do really stupid **** and never make full use of his God-given smarts. And eventually leading him to live in the Mountains in Colorado for 2 years living off the land to figure out his life.

I've taken a few of these online so called IQ Tests and avg around 110. I wouldn't believe the score entirely unless I am tested by a professional.

Uro, that's interesting in light of my own experience in architectural school.

Exact same phenomenon in regard to many faculty members, coupled with design-studio subject material and teaching methods that did absolutely nothing to prepare students for real world practice. The design labs, in which students spent many weeklong sessions of 16+ hour days, were, especially at high undergraduate and graduate levels, nothing but pet-theory testing grounds for the professors with the students as hard working lab rats.

I'm old enough to have "grandfathered out" as far as needing a graduate degree to take the state boards; I spent one semester in grad school and couldn't get the hell out of there fast enough. I'm glad I was able to leave school when I could still think independently. The lack of an advanced degree hasn't hurt my career a bit.

It makes about as much sense to say that someone has an IQ of 200, as to say that it is 400 from here to China. You need to have units in there, in this case, a reference to what type of test it is. Stanford-Binet produces results that are about 16 points lower than Cattell, just to name a few. If I recall correctly, you need about a 130 on Stanford-Binet and 148 on Cattell to be eligible for Mensa membership. It really isn't very exclusive as the top 1% is eligible.

If you really want to know your IQ, on any given scale, you may want to be tested by Mensa.

In my opinion, as a former Mensa member, your IQ primarily indicates how well you do on IQ tests.

I agree pretty much that these free online tests are all about getting your money. No way I'm paying $10 for some inacurate IQ cert!
I'm not bitter - I scored about what I expected, but with the above opinion in mind, I don't expect to tell anyone much less post it in my office.

I would kinda like to see the stats from that website's scores, though.

I did one of these once with random guesses and it was about 110 or 112.

I'd think randon markings should put you at 60 or so.

ahh the old IQ tests, back when i was in 6th grade i spent the entire year never doing a lick of homework. i passed every test with "A"s and by year end they wanted to flunk me and hold me back, for lack of participation and not doing homework. my parents to say the least where not happy, the school admin offered a suggestion of doing a bunch of make-up work to see if i could pass on to the next grade.
after finishing the supervised work in only a weekend the teachers graded and reviewed the work. apperantly to them they figured i was cheating somehow, the school had the psychologist spend a full saturday testing me with everything from personality tests to an IQ test. a week later the district held a meeting with my parents and a bunch of state people. bottom line was they told my parents that i was to smart for my own good (i screwed with the psych gal...not that way get your minds outa the gutter) and the curiculum at the school was not enough to stimulate or teach me. they felt i would be better off in a private school. the military reps were there and where more than happy to take me, that was not ever going to happen according to my dad. my parents couldn't afford a private school so i was put into the best the school had to offer, some really wierd classes with kids desperate to get into the ivy league schools. i ended up graduating 1 1/2yrs early and went to work in construction untill i could go to collage on my own. a bunch of different schools had offered me paid tuitions but my dad didn't want me for some reason going to school. I tried to go on my own but becouse i wasn't over 18 they needed my fathers info for income and what not he wouldn't do it so i lost out on both MIT and Caltech.

so i ended up taking a job with Gov in a skunks work facility doing stuff a can't tell you.
anyway point to the story was i do and don't want to know my IQ. becouse i was a minor they wouldn't tell me and i don't have the paitence to sit through another test. my mum can't remember that far back know, but i do remember asking her once and she said "all you need to know is that if your not carefull you'll end up in prison if they could ever catch you."

and for common sense and socability, my wife had to teach me. it's been a long 10yrs. she can and will regale most with some funny stories. i did join mensa for a short time... we'll leave it at that.

heh, i was put forward two years, then i changed schools (i changed schools 13 times) and their policy was "every child of equal age is equally skilled", in other werds, they never held anyone back or put anyone forward. it didn't occur to me until years later just how retarded a scheme that was.

yeah they gave me the option in high school if i wanted to move foward 2 grades but i didn't want to, so i took aditional classes and ended up finishing way early. my younger twin sisters were held back in 3rd grade though, then they ended up in the top of their class from then foward.

personaly i think the "average" guy has it better, my brother-in-law is a typical "average" guy. has no real complaints and doesn't get much, not the brightest bulb but he's happy. he doesn't know better and isn't really interested in learning much new. he goes through life complacently and is none the wiser, for me people iratate the absolute hell outa me and i get very frustratated with the norm. it's harder for me to derive pleasure out of life then for him. so advantage goes to the "average" guy.
