I have a leak from my front distibutor so I was going to replace the o-ring tomorrow and since I had the distributor off thought i would reset/check the timing. I know this sounds like a dumb question but I forgot which plug wire to use for the front and rear bank to set the timing? I am leaving for Monterey in 3 days so I got to get this done now.

Thanks in Advance for any help.

I am not sure I understand your question, but I will give it a shot.

Bank 1-4, rear bank, wire number 1, the right most wire furthest away from the distributor.
Bank 5-8, front bank, wire number 5, the left most wire closest to the distributor.

    Thanks much,

What do you guys put on the o-rings to seal them on the distributors. a little oil? grease? silicone?

I used to use the black RTV on the Orings. But I don't need to anymore :) After the CI, you should consider plugging your intake ends up. GT has the plugs for around 30 each. Going to be putting in the interior door mounted courtesy lights on the door panels tonight. Tough job to do when you have new upholstery. The thicker upholstery prevents the spring loaded pins to retract fully and to keep the lights mounted and not pop out as they have been doing. Thanks again for your help on the antenna. Works beautifully and the radio reception is better than new.

An o-ring is in a groove. All one does is compress it until you get metal to metal contact which ends the compression.

Don't put anything on it. The seal is effected by the resiliency of the o-ring. There is no movement, only compression and more contact as the circular crossection gets flattened.

With spin on oil filters, you put oil on the gasket because it must slide during the tightening operation. O-rings stay put, or should.

Well I used dielectric grease, Anyway it is good thing I checked, my front bank was 10 degrees off advanced. I replaced both o-rings checked the points, carbon and rotor all look really good, gapped the points at .35mm and reset the timing. I have problem on the front bank as the timing light jumps around a bit. I think it is because the lead is so short and near the other wires. I am running solid core wires so my radio reception is not the greatest, but I think it really works well on the spark. the rear bank is less erratic because of a longer cable farther from the others. What do you electric guys think? Looks like I will make it!!!!

    Thanks Much Guys!!!!

I think the spark plug wires lengths have nothing to do with it. More likely it is your points and condensors. If you change them to electronic ignition, you'll find that the timing will be rock steady.

    Bingo.

Rob is showing his car, so it must retain the points. A new set should smooth it out.
