Why steal? How would you like it if you owned a site like carfax and people were trading histories via messageboards? Did you ever try to sell an electronic product? Do you have any idea what theft of this nature costs? Do you have any idea how hard it is to make money online to begin with?

Do you steal from the store too or just from internet companies?

    Rich,

I don't think this is stealing. If a friend has a subscription to a service and uses it to help his friend, how is that stealing? He didn't say, "anyone know of a backdoor account". He asked for help from someone who already paid for the service. I don't think Car Fax is going to go broke because of this. The exposure is good for them.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. If everyone did this then Carfax would indeed go broke. Except for the link I put up, I fail to see how this could benefit Carfax in any way.

Indeed, a quick scan of their TOS makes it quite clear that what is being proposed in this thread is a violation the contract.

    and

I would doubt that any judge would consider running reports for other people, even if done for free, to be within the scope of the agreement.

    Rich,

Dont you ever share stock info with your friends at the Bar. Or do you tell them to get their own subscription to the Wall Street Journal and callously accuse them of stealing from the local hardware store?

Maybe if you were in the information business you would see the crime here. It's no different than shoplifting.

    Rich,

I'm happy with agreeing to disagree....... I understand your points. Your first is in regards to copyright law. That is an interesting one. But, I think since only one person will have possession or need for the info, this would not be an issue. Your second point is in regards to personal, non-commercial use. Since it is a personal relationship for non-commercial use I think they are safe here as well.

I want to point out that I'm not suggesting we setup a CarFax mill here, but most judges look for a level of reasonableness. This would apply here. In fact, since you bring up judges.......I don't think they would consider this an issue for their consideration.........Next case. :D

    Rich,

Just sell your shares in Car Fax and alleviate some stress. (No more need to defend them)

Oh… and BTW stay out of the Bikini Thread! By viewing the material in there you are violating copyright law and forcing some poor Porn site out of business! I don’t know any judge who wouldn’t throw the book at ya for violating sec 69 of the penile code! ;)

Julian, how much is the 348 you are considering?

And how much is a CarFax subscription to check it out?

    'Nuff said.
