John Wise will probably be starting a thread on replacing his timing drive bearings. For those who left early, we put John's car up on the lift to check out the 'loud bearing like noise' that appeared about a mile from the BBQ. Once we'd pulled the pass. side wheel & fender liner & started the engine, the diagnosis was pretty obvious: The rear bank timing drive bearing was hopping around like a Mexican jumping bean! John's just lucky that he wasn't at highway speeds & high revs when it gave way! Funny thing is that's about the same point that my front bank cam drive bearing let loose a couple of years ago! Only way that car was leaving was on a flat bed, or after the timing drive bearings were replaced... John decided that we'd do the work. Sad ending to the party for John, but at least we'll have a great war story for next year's BBQ!
It was a really fun day- and my first ride in a 348 Spyder (thanks John) capped it off very well. The reason for the ride (my very sick 308) is not my proudest moment- but no one said it was going to be easy- at least no one ever said it me. Here's a few pix- the one road shot is the last photo of the car running well- taken on the way to Verell's place. Thanks again- and if you want to learn how to replace the timing gear bearings on a 308 QV, it will be in the tech area someday soon. Dudes - looks like a great time was had by all - I was stuck in the UK on business, so sorry I didn't make it along. I'll be back early Sept, so hopefully make some of the late events.
Sorry for the delay in getting these posted, but I still don't have internet access hooked up at the new house yet. Thanks to Verell (and Birdman) for hosting such a great BBQ.
