Although minor, this noise is driving me nuts… At exactly 3200 rpm my engine has a slight tambourine sound. Only at that RPM will that noise occur, before and after that point nothing. (not a rattle, just a very faint jingle)

Attempting to duplicate the sound out of gear is fruitless but I’m positive it’s coming from the top of the engine.

Note: I had my 30K done in March and the car runs perfect….

Any suggestions would be appreciated.. I’m lost on trying to find this problem and although minor it's real annoying…

    Thanks
    Patrick

Could be the cam belt tensioners not ajusted properly and belts interfering with the cam belt covers.Usually happens after major service and the new belts stretch after driving a few hundred miles.

If the noise started after the service a common problem on 308/328 is the routing of the A/C hoses that need to be disconnected during the service. It happens at about the RPM level you describe and is caused by the hoses vibrating against body work or the fuel tank due to being twisted wrong and putting pressure against one or the other of them. If you take the wheel, inner fender and air intake off you can get in there and either move or insulate them, you should be able to run the motor while it is still on jack stands to confirm you have gotten rid of the noise. While you are under there you should also look at the coolant pipe from the thermostat housing to be sure it is not hitting either the fuel tank or the alternator pulley, that could also be causing your noise as well.

I have had the air intake vibrate against something in the passenger rear wheel well - perhaps the fender liner. This goes back several years so my memory is foggy other than it was the air intake. It had wear spots where it was touching another part. Vibrations occurred between 3 and 4K rpms. Mine is a 1987 328GTS. The noise was more of a buzzzzzzzz.

Check the exhuast manifold sheilds. These things come loose and rattle around like crazy at certain RPMs. Very easy to check. All ya gotta do is jack up the rear of the car, support on jack stands, crawl undernieth and see if you can move the sheilds around by hand. Better yet just tap on a solid part of the engine and get them to rattel around, then hold the sheild while tapping again. If the noise disappears, then you have found your rattle.

I had that very same jingling noise from the top of my engine on my 328 at low reves under load. I asked the same question on this forum but i sourced it to one of the rear (bulk head)exhaust bolt washers that worked loose and was makeing a jingling/tambourine noise. Was a pig to get to(very tight for my hands). Check the bolts for looseness.

Just took delivery of my 328 two days ago so not at all familiar with the car yet. Runs great and had cam belts and all other belts changed before shipment. On acceleration only I get this loud metallic jingling sound but goes away when take foot off the gas. Seems like sound goes away some when engine gets hot. Does this make sense to anyone, it sounds like a volkswagen bug used to sounds under acceleration. Kinda metallic like a chain jingling. It is very loud.
