I just drove 1200 miles in my 355 GTS. About mid trip, I noticed a bit of a droning noise coming from the rear. The sound was like a bad wheel bearing or tire with some sort of severe problem. The sound was very pronounced at 4 to 5k rpm. Not as noticeable at 3000 rpm. Now that I am home, I can hear it at any speed above 20mph. Visually, the tires look fine. They have maybe 2500 miles on them. The car has 20k miles on it. It is not in the driveline. When the car coasts in nuetral, it is very pronounced.
    Any thoughts?

    Trying to picture "droning" noise....

Is it a rythmic sound... high low high low - or is it constant...

1.) Tire out of balance? (rhythmic noise) - have you check the pressure? mybe a low tire?
2.) Bearings? (constant metalic kind of noise)
3.) exhaust/by pass valve? (constant rattle like sound)

I was able to view the tires in the daylight. The passenger side rear is cupped. I obviously need an alignment. What causes one wheel to go out of spec? Can anyone other than the dealer do the alignment? They are a good distance away. Can the tire be salvaged somehow, it has less tha 3k miles on it.

The aligment on the 355 (and other f-cars are pretty complex) - so you will have to go to a shop that really knows alignments - you may want to post your area on the board - others may know some in your area...

Ok Speeder - when you take it to whomever (outside a dealer which will know what to do - or will look it up). Here is more detail than you will ever want to know on this topic (Ala - Mitch Alsup - which is a member of this board - and has a really good handle on most things 355 related.. There are many threads on this topic as well - do a search on 355 tire or 355 suspension. Here is this link - and you should write down what you need when getting it balance - since this is all machine driven (if you go to a good alignment place) - they should be able to do this by plugging in the right info.

Here is the link - and if you understand even some of it - you are way ahead of me... Again - if this does not give you the exact alignment settings - one of the post recently had them - if not PM Mitch and he will help I am sure...

On the tire situation - I would go back to the place you bought it - if you bought road hazzard with it (which I never do) they will replace it without question... Otherwise - I have had a few situations (even a screw in the tire) - I take it back - talk with them - I have never had them not replace the tire... I had one incident that literally the day after a new set of tires on one of my p-cars I got a screw in one of the rears - the guys replaced it without even asking.. I buy most of my tires from TireDiscounters - however I have an alignment shop do the alignment.

    Hope that helps,

What was the outcome here? My 348 just today started what sounds like the same thing on the RHS. I had the tires inspected and rechecked all of the lug bolts for torque - they are all fine but still have the noise. Not rev variable, but speed/tire rotation variable, and more pronounced at lower speed. Gonna have the wheels checked for balance tomorrow. I am hoping it is a weight that has come off but was quietly $h!tt!ng myself for a while today given the spate of wheels falling off cars recently.

    Cheers

I had the same thing on the RF of my 98 355. Tire was fine. turned out to be a wheel bearing. Jack the car up spin the rear tires and see if you feel or hear any drag. If so look at the wheel bearing.

Rear hub carrier bearing problems are not unusual in either of those cars. It sometimes happens even without a great number of miles. Put the car in the air and run the motor with the car in top gear. Listen at the rear hub with a stethescope or similar device. If you find one side rumbling and the other is quiet you have found your problem. You can also do it on the road. if you drive down a suitable street at 30-40 MPH clutch the car to reduce engine noise and gently turn one direction then the other. If you hear the noise come and go it is prob a hub carrier bearing. If present on a right turn but not left, it is the left bearing.

I will try that - I am definitely hearing it on the right side but not the left - I used both sides of the freeway on the way back from the tire place (had the rears balanced again JIC and no joy) to hear the sound coming off of the barriers. It is very noticable at between 30 and 40 mph and I did do the clutch thing as my exhaust is effing noisy!!

I have done the easy things and I don't have a place to work on the car so it will have to be off to the shop, I think.

Will follow up when I know what the problem was (is).

    Cheers

The droning turned out to be athe rear wheel bearing assenbly. Ridiculously expensive as usual. The bearing is most likely your problem.

Thanks, mate - I have kinda boiled it down to that as well. Sodacom's shows the bearings at $110 so hopefully I have caught it in time so that nothing else has been damaged.

If you pull the bearing, take it to a 'bearing shop' ... a bearing is a bearing. Example ... the ones in the 308 water pump are standard and can be sourced for <$25.

    Worth a check.

I have the ability, but not the infrastructure, to do this, so I pay a professional instead...I blew up the picture of the bearings at Sodacom's and could probably source them from a more mundane source but its academic since I don't have a place to work on the car. Downside of being an "urban pioneer" in downtown LA....but my commute is only about 8 blocks and no freeways!!

    Cheers
