Hi, I have a 79 308gt4, recently the clutch is slipping in 4th and 5th when I accelerate from low speed (too much torque not enough grip!), I assume this is a clutch near the end of its life and/ or possibly a leak in the seal between the gearbox and the clutch resulting in a "wet" clutch.

I am looking for a comprehensive procedure on how to change the clutch on a 308 engine and a list of recommended parts to change when I am in there anyway.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Any documents/ procedures can be sent to [email protected]

    Thanks again!

I wish I could help you, but I've never done this before. However, before you start, do you have copies of the shop manual and parts manual? I understand these are pretty valuable to have before doing something like this.

You can get copies of these at http://www.dino308gt4.com/Ferrari/ in the downloads section.

Also, can you please fill out your profile?

    Thanks,
    Dom

This is a fairly good step-by step clutch replacement. While written for a newer 308, the Carb'd 308s clutch was identical to the 308GT4:

    http://www.camerafilters.com/ec/clutch.htm

However, have you adjusted the clutch? The early (carb'd 308s & GT4s) clutches can start slipping due to wear that hasn't been regularly compensated for by clutch adjustments. Often simply re-adjusting the clutch linkage to compensate for the wear will stop the slipping. It's worth a try.

The clutch adjustment procedure in the above post is WRONG tho.

The 308 GT4 workshop manual has the correct procedure in some detail. Key is to setup the turnbuckle like link to the correct length as described in the manual. Once the link adjustment is done, it's unlikely that the end of the clutch cable will need adjusting unless the cable is starting to stretch(indicating imminant failure), or else someone has miss-adjusted the clutch cable.

If you don't have the 308GT4 WSM, it's available in Steve Jenken's private document collection (see link below)

    PARTS SOURCES

The most comprehensive parts sorce is Ferrari.uk. A couple of years ago the Ferrari factory shipped them 51 TONS of 308 parts, the remaining end of life inventory. If they don't have something, then you'll be lucky to find it anywhere else. In general their prices are a lot better than buying thru a local Ferrari dealer. They're a FerrariChat sponsor, but their online catalog is only accessable via Ferrari's owners club:
    www.owners.ferrari.com

You'll have to register with the site. Once youre in the site, keep clicking the 'spare parts' menu items & gadgets until you finally get to ferrari.uk's catalog.

    Some great parts sources are:
    T.Rutlands - www.trutlands.com
    Sodacoms - www.sodacoms.com
    Dennis McCann - www.allferrariparts.com
    Italian Car Parts - www.italiancarparts.com

This list is NOT comprehensive, but it will get you started.
Search the old ferrarichat.com Tech Q&A archives for 'parts' and 'supplier':

hey if I did it, anyone can, I agree I would set the adjustment first. early 308 and gt4 clutches have freeplay later cars and ones converted to the sissy ;-)
easy clutch setup do not and as the clutch wears the pedal moves up. I like the heavy clutch people always ask about my well developed left leg muscles at the gym! If you do it buy all new bearings while your at it and you need a special tool from Baum to take off the transfer gear nut!

    Hi
http://dino308gt4.com (under downloads) has both the 308GT4 WSM and the Service Bulletins. You need to determine if the clutch modification was done before doing the adjustments. Some cars were modified to reduce the amount of pedal effort required.
