I have gotten in the habit of opening my engine lid when I park in my garage to help disipate the heat. After a good ride on a hot day, my 308 (like many other cars of like) are pretty darn hot. This may be too anal, but I have piece of mind.

Do any of you share the concern of a car fire in your garage?

Not from engine heat.....All cars get very hot from engine heat....my BMW 540 really heats up my garage when parked...it is surprising how much hotter the garage is after 15 minutes or so after closing the door.

I take normal precautions, mainly against an "accident" while working on my cars...or some freak occurance, so I have a smoke alarm and two fire extinguishers mounted on the wall.

If you want peace of mind, make sure you replace all the fuel hoses are your car....how old are they? That was one of the first things I did on my 78 308 GTS...I have to admit I have not gotten around to it on my 17yo 328GTS...

    Not really,

I'm more concerned while I'm driving. Once it's stopped it's getting cooler not hotter. But, I think I'll put an extinguisher in the garage just incase........

Herein lies the difference between "heat" and "temperature". The 328 generates a lot of heat, but at relatively low temperatures -- at least, compared to the glow in the daylight turbo on the EVO. The Ferrari doesn't have any parts I can light a cigarette from. ;) But the turbo is small, so it's high temp but not all that much heat. The parked EVO radiates more heat from the Brembos and warmed up Yokos.

But all my cars have an extinguisher, so the garage has more extinguishers than the rest of the house combined. ;)

But if the "slow down" light came on, I'd probably want to let the cat cool before garaging it.

    Now if you had a twin turbo'd F40 ... you'd be a lucky bugger. :D

in addition to a smoke detector, i have fire detectors over each car in the garage - all wired into the alarm system.so if anything should start burning, the house alarm triggers and the authorities are alerted lickety-split. better safe than sorry. i can't say i've ever opened my engine hood for rapid cool-down except on the track on hot days after a run.

    Yup.

Rate of rise and smoke detector in the garage hooked to central alarm.

Large b/c extinguisher on the wall.

Can never be too careful, plus I have a couple of different cars that could always cause trouble.

Not too much of a risk, but better safe than sorry. We still need to replace those hard old fuel lines, though. They'll crack soon enough.

Garage fire is more likely due to stored chemicals or fuel and interaction with another heat source like a clothes dryer or water heater.

Your car is more likely to catch fire while running or immediately after it is parked. I do open my deck lid to let more heat out to save my hoses and other heat-sensitive components. I don't know how much good it does, but I get to look at my engine.

I have three 2.5 pound wall mounted extinguishers in the garage. Probably not enough to stop an inferno, but they're close at hand and should be enough to keep things from getting out of control.

Ditto on the chemicals and and rear lid. I've 1 hour rated drywall, no exposed wood (joists/studs) and no flammable chemicals, cardboard or papers nearby. I've also been toying with the idea of putting in a sprinkler system. It'd be easy enough to do on a weekend. Both of my toys get pretty hot on the way home.

I'm bad at having an extinguisher around. Damn, if the house burnt to the ground, I'll have to settle for my insurance company to rebuild my house and repay it's insured contents! Bummer! "Yes Mr. State Farm, I did have a 52" wall-mount HDTV in every room..........

Someone recently told me that if you want to extend the life of seals etc. it's a good idea to open the hood and put a fan on the engine to cool it down quicker. So it's not the car catching fire but the cheesey fan that concerns me ;)
